If you're a fan of The Legend of Zelda video game franchise, you know the pain of eagerly awaiting a specific release date, only for those plans to change in a heartbeat. Breath of the Wild is perhaps the biggest example, as it was set to be released for the Wii U in 2015 but ended up coming our way two years later in 2017, when the Nintendo Switch was already on the market. A similar scenario happened with Tears of the Kingdom, which was delayed from March 2022 to May 2023.
Proving to be a worthy new entry in the iconic Nintendo franchise, The Legend of Zelda movie was also met with a slight, unexpected delay last year. Audiences were originally intended to explore the kingdom of Hyrule on March 26, 2027, but the date was changed to May 7. Now, we have yet another release update, but this time it is for the better (which marks a first for the franchise).
The Legend of Zelda movie release date will be moved up a week
Did somebody play the Song of Time? If so, it definitely worked. The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced that the movie adaptation will be moved up a week from May 7, 2027, to April 30 in a new post on X (formerly Twitter).
"This is Miyamoto," he wrote, "I would like to let you know that the worldwide theatrical release date for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda has been moved up to April 30, 2027, from May 7. The team is working hard to deliver the film to everyone as soon as possible. There’s less than a year to go until release, so thank you for waiting."

The Legend of Zelda will star Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the Hero of Time, Link, and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda. Furthermore, the film is being directed by Wes Ball, who also helmed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and the entire Maze Runner trilogy. During CinemaCon 2026, it was announced that production officially wrapped after filming in New Zealand from November 2025 to mid-April 2026.
Even though we're less than a year away from witnessing Nintendo's next venture onto the big screen, there's still a lot we don't know about The Legend of Zelda. Thanks to set videos, it has been confirmed that Princess Zelda's ever-trusty bodyguard, Impa, will make an appearance, portrayed by Dichen Lachman (Severance). Beyond that, we don't even know who will play Ganondorf, or whether the iconic villain will act as the film's main antagonist in the first place.

Fans are also eager to discover what type of story will be told, since it's all but a given that we won't watch Link solve puzzles in seven different dungeons, as is the case in most of the video games. Could we get a simpler narrative that resembles that of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom? Fortunately, some answers may come sooner than anticipated.
With Summer Game Fest around the corner, it would be the perfect opportunity for Nintendo and Sony to give us a small glimpse at The Legend of Zelda movie. After all, the 2022 edition of the show featured a small segment dedicated to The Last of Us TV show, while the first trailer for the Twisted Metal live-action series was revealed during Summer Game Fest 2023.
Granted, since The Legend of Zelda is just a little under a year from release, it seems like a much safer bet that our first look at the highly anticipated movie will come at The Game Awards 2026, which is set to take place on December 10. Of course, this is Nintendo we're talking about, so there's always a chance that it decides to drop a full official trailer on any random day. However, one thing is for certain: We'll visit the kingdom of Hyrule sooner than anticipated, and we couldn't be any more excited.
The Legend of Zelda will be released on Apr. 30, 2027.
