Let's roll back the years to 1999. Stephen Sommers' first Mummy movie was released, and it kicked off an entire franchise that spanned two more main installments and an entire spin-off saga in the form of The Scorpion King. For years, audiences watched as Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn O'Connell (Rachel Weisz) survived ancient curses and close encounters with the undead. Unfortunately, the adventure seemingly came to an end in 2008 when The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was released to negative reviews.

Universal attempted to reboot the franchise in 2017 with Tom Cruise in the lead. However, this film not only killed the series from the get-go but also cursed an entire planned cinematic universe centered around various monsters. So, where could the studio go after backing itself into a corner? Down the path that once brought it success, of course. It's nearly time to run it back, as the next Mummy movie starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz is closer than expected.

The fourth Mummy film is titled Book of the Dead and is set to be released in 2027

Mark your calendars, because the fourth Mummy film will hit theaters on Oct. 15, 2027—exactly one year after the release announcement. Furthermore, Universal also unveiled the project's full title: The Mummy: Book of the Dead.

In addition to Fraser and Weisz, The Mummy: Book of the Dead will also feature many other returning actors from the previous films. John Hannah will be back as Jonathan Carnahan; Oded Fehr will bring Ardeth Bay to life one more time; and Kevin J. O'Connor will play Beni Gabor again. Moreover, Michael Johnston—who recently made waves for his performance as Bear in 2026's surprise horror hit, Obsession—has also joined the cast of The Mummy: Book of the Dead, although details about his role remain under wraps.

Principal photography for The Mummy: Book of the Dead is currently underway in England, and set photos have already given us our first look at Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz back as Rick and Evie O'Connell. Moreover, Michael Johnston revealed during an interview with Attitude that the upcoming film will try to capture some of the magic that made the original installments so special:

"The film is just returning to its original formula. It's just like that first film. It's going to give the fans exactly what they want. Rick and Evie are back. We're going on an adventure again. It’s so exciting. The film rips. It just goes immediately. It's truly an action film. It's fight scenes and chase scenes and running through the streets."

The Mummy: Book of the Dead will be directed by Radio Silence's Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who also helmed Ready or Not (2019), its sequel Here I Come, and horror movies like Abigail and Scream (2022). Unfortunately, plot details about the fourth Mummy movie remain under wraps, but it has been revealed that the events of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor will be completely ignored. That means we'll watch a direct follow-up to The Mummy Returns.

During an interview with Associated Press, Brendan Fraser revealed that The Mummy: Book of the Dead is a film he's always wanted to make:

"The one [Mummy film] I wanted to make is forthcoming. And I've been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It's time to give the fans what they want."

Fortunately, not only is Fraser's dream film a reality, but it will come our way sooner than anticipated. The Mummy: Book of the Dead initially targeted a May 19, 2028, release date, but we won't have to wait that long to see Rick and Evelyn O'Connell back in action once more.

The Mummy: Book of the Dead will be released on Oct. 15, 2027.
