The Penguin only has 8 episodes, but all of them are bangers
By Dan Selcke
With its fourth episode, "Cent'anni," The Penguin is officially halfway done with its first season. Yes, there are only eight episodes of this show, which might break the hearts of those fans who have been loving this DC crime caper. Who would have thought that a spinoff show about Batman's third or fourth most famous villain would be one of the most gripping dramas of the year, especially when a lot of the recent Marvel TV shows have felt a little mediocre? I'm happy to be surprised!
I got to watch all eight episodes of The Penguin ahead of time, and I can tell you that the show builds up a ton of momentum going into its endgame, and the final episodes are among some of its best. So even though we're halfway done, there's a lot of great stuff to look forward to. I'm already looking forward to seeing what people have to say about the ending. It should ruffle some feathers.
What does "Cent'anni" mean?
In the latest episode of The Penguin, Sofia Falcone, confronts the family members who falsely swore she was crazy, which resulted in her getting locked in Arkham State Hospital for 10 years. These people have done her wrong, and while she's clearly not happy about it, she resolves at dinner to leave Gotham City behind and start a new life. "Cent'anni," she toasts to her family members.
"Cent'anni" is an Italian phrase meaning "a hundred years." When used as a toast, as it often is, it means, "May you live a hundred years." It's a nice thing to say, so it's Sofia's way of making peace with her family members before leaving them.
It's also a huge lie, because when everyone is in bed Sofia gases the entire house, killing most of them. She intends to make a new beginning for herself, but not the kind her family members were hoping for.
New episodes of The Penguin air Sunday nights on HBO and Max. Now that Sofia has killed off her enemies within the Falcone crime family, she's top dog, and she'll surely be setting her sights on Oz.
