In the years following the conclusion of The Walking Dead in 2022, the franchise has continued to spin out in different directions. Looking ahead to what future spinoffs have to offer, The Walking Dead Universe overseer Scott Gimple foresees more globe-trotting adventures!
So far, we've seen Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) venture into the heart of New York City. Going even more international, both Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) have forayed across the Atlantic Ocean, visiting new locations like Greenland and France. Soon they'll end up in England and Spain, getting well acquainted with what zombies are like across the pond.
There's still plenty of the world left forThe Walking Dead to explore. Personally, I'd like to see a show set in China. It wouldn't be the first time we've seen a Walking Dead project take place in Asia; Wesley Chu previously wrote a novel called The Walking Dead: Typhoon, following a group of survivors during the outbreak in China. There's also people who want the series to go full sci-fi and have a story set in outer space, provided anybody has managed to get a rocket off the ground in the midst of the zombie apocalypse. Wherever spinoffs will take us, at least we won't be stuck in the monotonous forests of Georgia forevermore.
Speaking to Screen Rant, Scott Gimple teased that the Walking Dead Universe will continue to foray into exciting new territories. "There's one that we're working on that I'm very, very excited to see that we've never been before. But I'd aIso love to see it in Tokyo, I would love to see it in Africa, and I would love to see it in Iceland. I know that's a weird one, but we want to spam the globe because there's stories all over the globe," he said.
Currently, the show's globe-trotting adventures have follows iconic characters such as Daryl and Carol. But we won't always see characters we already know well. Gimple is keen to introduce new heroes and villains. "We want to see other characters throughout the world, and how they're faring," he explained. "And we have had a lot of experiments to that. We've actually done really cool stories towards that, but they just haven't come to fruition for this reason or that. But I will say that by doing them, I've essentially seen those shows in my brain, and I really like them."
Gimple has previously teased that the franchise may take a brave step towards comedy. There's so many potential avenues to explore. Where would you like to see The Walking Dead franchise head next?
The Walking Dead continues to grow and expand with Dead City season 2, debuting on May 4.
