The Wheel of Time, based on the epic fantasy book series by Robert Jordan, has gotten better and better with each season aired on Prime Video, with the recently completely third season being the best yet. We're all waiting on pins and needles to see if Amazon and Sony decide to renew the series, hopefully through the end of this very long story.
The third season ended with Rand al'Thor (Josha Stradowski) tapping into the One Power and making it rain in the desert, proving to the Aiel people that he was indeed their prophesied messiah. It was a powerful moment, but also scary, because whenever Rand taps into the One Power, he runs the risk of going mad.
"We really want to just set up Rand," showrunner Rafe Judkins told Collider. "He's the forefronted character of this season, and at the end of it, we wanted to really have him in a place where he's embracing his duality. A lot of this season is about his duality and about the fact that he doesn't get to save the world or destroy it. He has to do both. He doesn't get to be a sweet farm boy or power incarnate. He has to be both."
"What we wanted to do was have the season end with a moment where he truly embraces his duality, and you hopefully see that in his endpoint of the season. The season has begun with Egwene seeing the good in him and the best in him and Lanfear seeing the worst in him, and both of these women embracing those sides of the character. By the end of this season, you have Egwene looking at him and seeing the worst in him, and Lanfear looking at him and seeing the worst in him because she's seeing the best in him. They've flipped by the end of the season, so it has a really nice dramatic circularity to it for us. His face at the end of the season sells our story that we're going to tell with him in Season 4."
That's good to hear, because I thought that final shot of Rand looking at Egwene, power swirling around him, not revealing whether he plans to give it up or not, was chilling. I definitely want to see where things go next. Judkins has plans, but it's up to Amazon and Sony whether he gets to act on them.
"I can say that we've put a lot of pieces in place at the end of season 3 to tell some of the most iconic stories from book six, which is a really important book in the series, and some of the biggest moments from book five as well," Judkins told Entertainment Weekly. "So we're in the area of the books right now that is some of the most exciting."
The third season of The Wheel of Time adapted the fourth book in the series, The Shadow Rising, which is widely considered a turning point in the narrative. That hot streak continues in books 5 and 6, The Fires of Heaven and Lord of Chaos, both of which are considered excellent entries. I have no doubt they would make great TV...again, if Amazon and Sony allow it.
"[T]he great shows of television past really hit their stride in season 3 and 4, and I think that's what this show in this series has the potential to do and just keep getting better from here," Judkins continued. "So we're all very eager to continue this story and finish it."
Same here. I'll leave you with this final quote from Judkins: "I can't say anything, but we have great plans for it. If we get to do it, I think it's going to be fucking amazing."
