It's still hard to believe it's true, but next year CD Projekt RED is launching a brand new expansion for its decade-old megahit video game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Titled Songs of the Past, this new adventure will bring players back to the Continent, where they'll once more play as Geralt of Rivia as he hunts monsters, fights injustices, and plays enough Gwent to make even seasoned card sharks quake with fear.
Songs of the Past is a brand new chapter for The Witcher video game saga on the scale of previous expansions Blood & Wine and Hearts of Stone, rather than some small little add-on. It'll bring players back into this grimdark fantasy world ahead of the release of The Witcher 4, which begins a brand new trilogy that features Geralt's protégé and adoptive daughter Ciri of Cintra as the new lead. But outside of that, we know very little about what's in store in the upcoming expansion.
That's all about to change next month, because today CD Projekt RED announced that it will be revealing brand new details for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past at gamescom 2026. Running from August 24 to August 30 in Cologne, Germany, gamescom is a premiere video game event that often features new trailers, announcements, gameplay previews and more. It's the perfect sort of venue for Songs of the Past to make its debut.
From the sound of things, it will have a fairly substantial presence. According to a press release from CD Projekt RED, new information for the expansion will be shared at the event's Opening Night Live ceremony hosted by Geoff Keighley, which begins on August 25 at 2:00 p.m. ET / 11:00 a.m. PT. That will no doubt be streamed, as these sorts of gaming events typically are, so people can watch and share in the excitement no matter where in the world they're located.

Where is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past showcase located at gamescom 2026?
For those lucky enough to actually attend this year's gamescom event, however, Songs of the Past will also be showcased on the show floor. There are a few places attendees will be able to check out guided showcases for the game; check out the details straight from CD Projekt RED below:
- In the business area, booth B065 in Hall 4.2, from August 26 to August 28
- In the entertainment area, booths B030 and A031 in Hall 8.1, from August 26 to August 30.
When does The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past release?
If there's one piece of information I'm strongly suspecting we'll get at gamescom, it's a solid release date for Songs of the Past. The press release confirms what we already knew, which is that the expansion releases sometime in 2027. With that window growing ever closer, it would make sense for CD Projekt RED to give fans a firm date to put on their calendars. That way, anyone who wants a seamless experience revisiting the massive adventure that already exists in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt can do so, and roll straight into Songs of the Past on release.
But considering the showcases, it's also fairly likely we'll get gameplay or some new details about the actual story for the expansion as well. After all, this is new content for a game released in 2015; it's not like CD Projekt RED needs to reinvent the entire game, just give us a hint about how this brand new release will add on to their already existing masterpiece.

What systems will The Witcher 3's Songs of the Past expansion available on?
There's one other detail that's worth noting from today's announcement: the systems Songs of the Past will release on. According to the press release, Songs of the Past will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This is interesting, because the base Witcher 3 game and its previous expansions are also available on previous generation systems like the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. This hints that Songs of the Past will have a higher technical demand than earlier expansions, so plan accordingly.
That makes sense to me. If this release is meant to be something of a bridge between The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 4, then leaning into the current gen systems is the logical way to go. It means CD Projekt RED won't have to waste resources on fine-tuning the release for older systems — something which was a serious impediment for the famously glitchy launch of its other big game, Cyberpunk 2077 — and it will allow the new expansion to make the most use of all the improvements from The Witcher 3's gorgeous next gen update. And of course, it will force gamers who want to play more Witcher to get on board with a system that will not only be able to support Songs of the Past, but The Witcher 4 as well.
For now, the fact that we know for sure when the next big update about Songs of the Past is coming is plenty to get excited about. We'll be watching closely for more news as we head into next month, and gamescom 2026.
