The Witcher will make good on its promise to adapt the whole of author Andrzej Sapkowski's epic fantasy series. The first three seasons are already out, the fourth is in post-produciton, and the fifth and final season is filming as we speak.
When last we left things at the end of season 3, Ciri had been warped away to a distant land, Geralt of Rivia was setting out to find her, and Yennefer was forming the Lodge of Sorceresses. That's where we'll pick up in season 4, with actor Liam Hemsworth stepping in for Henry Cavill in the role of Geralt. As for season 5, that's a bit harder to parse. Beware potential SPOILERS below.
According to Redanian Intelligence, the show has completed filming in South Africa, mainly filming scenes involving Ciri. We reported not long ago on a scene where Ciri is forced to do battle in a fighting pit. According to RI, at least one of the new Ciri scenes involves lots of dead bodies. Whether she's responsible for those bodies or is just around when they fall, Ciri can't catch a break.
Another scene filmed in South Africa involves Anya Chalotra and Anna Shaffer, who play the sorceresses Yennefer and Triss Merigold respectively. Unlike Geralt and Ciri, who have clear book paths to follow, Yennefer's story will likely be largely based on original content, so it's hard to know what she and Triss might get up to. I'll also note that there's no guarantee that their paths will cross with Ciri's in this point just because the actors are filming in the same country; the team filmed in several different spots in South Africa, and they can dress them up to appear as different and disparate as they please.
Whatever the team filmed in South Africa, it doesn't look like Liam Hemsworth or Geralt are a part of it. Going into the fourth season, Hemsworth has the most to prove. Fans will be looking to see if he can live up to the example set by Henry Cavill.
We'll be watching The Witcher season 4 on Netflix by the end of the year, although we don't know exactly when new episodes as set to release as of yet. Hopefully, the fact that they're filming season 5 this early means that we'll see the end of the show sometime in 2026, with a minimum amount of waiting in between.
