There are iconic scenes in House of the Dragon season 3. Then, there’s the iconic scene between Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) in the finale, “The Treasons at Tumbleton,” which just took it to another level of hilariously amazing. As it turns out, one part of that scene wasn’t even scripted.
If you’re wondering which scene I’m talking about, I’m referring to the moment the brothers reunited after spending an entire season apart. More specifically, it's the scene when Aegon storms up to Aemond, slaps him across the face, and bellows out, “I’m ALIVE, imbecile.”
In an interview with Hits Radio, Glynn-Carney revealed a fun little detail. The slap wasn’t a part of the script.
“The slap wasn't scripted, and I'd said to Ewan before. I was like, ‘Do you mind if I slap you when I arrive?’ And he's like, ‘Yeah, maybe save it for the close.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, okay.’ 'Cause that would have been about 15 slaps that he got.”
By "close," Glynn-Carney meant the close-up shot.
This whole exchange is hilarious to me. It's probably the most memed moment of the finale, and the best part was improvised. I guess sometimes the best moments are the improvised ones.
Glynn-Carney also said his first delivery of the line was the one they used and that they tried other takes afterward — the “safer options,” as the actor put it — but nothing hit the same Pun intended. Talk about a great gut instinct and a moment that will live on in this fandom.

While this great moment wasn't actually in the script, this scene is also very different from what went down in George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood. In the book, Aegon and Aemond never even reunite after the Fall of King's Landing.
House of the Dragon is definitely moving in a different direction than Fire & Blood for Aegon and Aemond's story and their relationship.
What will happen with Aegon and Aemond in House of the Dragon season 4?
Condal previously hinted to fans that the brothers would reunite at some point, but we didn’t know it would be in the finale. Now that they are back together, Aegon basically drags Aemond out of Harrenhal with a few goals in mind, setting off on a new path.
One is to somehow find Vhagar, who vanished at the beginning of season 3 and hasn’t been seen since. This is, again, a big story change for Vhagar, as she does not separate from Aemond in Fire & Blood at all. It sounds like we're going to see the two brothers searching for her and partaking in a little bit of sibling bonding time, perhaps? If it means more improvised, hysterical lines, one can only hope.
Condal has also mentioned that there’d be more “wild dragons” in season 4. Perhaps the search for Vhagar will lead Aemond and Aegon to those dragons? We'll have to wait and see.
After they find Vhagar, Aegon’s second mission is to go back to Tumbleton and locate Daeron (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth), their younger brother, who has had the Hightower's support in becoming the king. Of course, Aegon does not like that whatsoever and wants to stop that in its tracks. Tumbleton is essentially destroyed after that major battle in the finale, and Daeron is missing.
We’re honestly unsure if Daeron is even alive, but he should have a bigger role in the upcoming story. We've never seen the three brothers together, so that would be quite interesting.
Lastly, Aegon wants Aemond to come with him to take back the Iron Throne. Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) is sitting on it right now, but as we’ve seen in the last few wacky episodes, Rhaenyra has been moving down a dark path.
Helaena, before she jumped to her death in the Red Keep, predicted in her tapestry that Rhaenyra would die on the throne in a sea of fire with blood dripping down her body from the crown that she wore. And Rhaenyra most certainly did not like that. With Aegon and Aemond now back together, that could mean they’ll interact with Rhaenyra really soon.
I’m not sure how we’re going to fit all of this into eight episodes. There are still several iconic moments that have to take place — including the Battle Above the Gods Eye and the second Tumbleton battle (if that even occurs after how tarnished it is). How this sudden reunion between the two brothers will work is beyond me, but I suppose we’ll have to wait and see when season 4 comes around.
