I never thought I would imagine the House of the Dragon season 3 finale as a comedy, but here we are, and Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) are at the forefront of it.
It feels like it has been ages since we saw the two Targaryen brothers together — and for good reason, considering Aemond did kind of attempt to kill Aegon in the Battle of Rook’s Rest. There’s going to be some animosity between them. Shortly after, Aegon went on the run, and Aemond went off to Harrenhal, and then Sunfyre rose from the dead.
When Aegon got Sunfyre back in episode 7, his first order of business was to fly to Harrenhal and speak to his brother, who had been hiding out there for ages. Granted, Aemond had been on another level of weird dream sequences, more so than Daemon in season 2, thanks to Alys Rivers, so he didn't really know what was happening around Westeros.

In the finale, we get a brief reunion between the two brothers at Harrenhal. Aegon descends from Sunfyre and storms up to Aemond. The younger son is in disbelief and says, “It cannot be; you are dead.” Aegon proceeds to slap him across the face and then exclaims, “I’m ALIVE!” and a couple of beats later, “Imbecile."
I just can’t with these two. I was laughing so hard during this scene.
There are moments in this series that feel so well-acted they almost seem fake, as if the actors were messing around and having a fun time, but this instance had me rolling on the floor. It’s the same attitude that I’ve been loving from Aegon that’s started to make me shift into loving Team Green more than Team Black — because who squares up to their brother like that and then delivers that line, especially with someone who knows how to fight like Aemond?
Then again, these two have had a rather complicated relationship for years, so it makes sense that their reunion would be just as complicated, if not more so, because Aegon straight-up threatens him. Aemond pleads for forgiveness, but Aegon says that if Aemond does everything he says (meaning find where Vhagar is, fly to Tumbleton and stop Ormund from trying to make Daeron king, return to King's Landing, take down Rhaenyra, and get the throne back), then maybe he’d forgive him.
And honestly? Yeah, same. I’m kind of on Aegon’s side this time around, even if he’s still lowkey the worst. I love to hate him.
What does this mean for Aemond's and Aegon's stories going forward?
This reunion does open up a lot of avenues for the two brothers. Their reunion doesn't even happen in Fire & Blood, and the show itself has taken some liberties in changing the source material. Even so, it makes me wonder what could be next for them and how they are going to approach the impending fights that will surely occur.
Aemond specifically has a major battle coming up – the Battle Above the God’s Eye – against Daemon, which means that he really does need to get his ish kinda together to be able to fight properly.
Now with Aegon in the mix, I’m curious as to how exactly that will break down in House of the Dragon season 4. It feels like we're going in a very different direction, but I don't necessarily hate it.
In the meantime, at least we have their reunion and that hilarious delivery from Glynn-Carney to last me the next two years and keep me out of my Helaena-induced sadness before the series returns.
