Warwick Davis shades Disney for cancelling (and burying) its Willow show: "It's a travesty"
By Ashley Hurst
Disney's Willow TV series, a followup to the beloved 1988 fantasy movie from George Lucas, quickly garnered a cult following when it premiered on Disney+. The family fantasy was a delightful adventure, and everyone involved was desperate to make more seasons. However, optimism for the show's future was soon quashed by Disney, who didn't give it another chance.
You may remember that Disney marketed the hell out of Willow. It seemed to have more promotion that most anything outside the streamer's key properties, Marvel and DC. Disney clearly had high hopes for the series, but when the show premiered, it was quickly evident that viewership wasn't quite up to scratch. Reviews were mixed, but it had a dedicated following. And ultimately, after several months of deliberation, the reboot was put to rest.
Not only was Willow cancelled, but the reboot was removed from the streamer altogether. The show has been lost to the streaming ether, with no way for fans to watch it. There's not even a physical release!
With protests over this mistreatment still continuing on online, star Warwick Davis — who played sorcerer Willow Ufgood in the original movie and who returned for the show — is more than happy to throw fuel on the fire. "It’s a travesty that [Disney+] value shareholders over subscribers in their creative decision-making," he wrote on X. "I only ever saw each episode once!" He also shared a photo from the set of season 1. Check it out:
For the record, this isn't the first time Davis has called out Disney for mistreating the show. With almost 20K likes on his new post, it's abundantly clear that fans are still angry at Disney. Look no further than the comments. "It was a fantastic series and I hate to see what Disney did with it. Really enjoyed seeing it (the one time lol)!" one fan wrote. Another called for "JUSTICE FOR WILLOW!!!!," adding that the series was, "Such a fantastic show that had so much more story to tell, it's a shame they wouldn't continue the story."
Protesting now won't change Disney's mind, but it's very right to call them out for axing shows before their time, and especially when they wipe the series from existence like they did with Willow.
