In the penultimate episode of Wednesday season 2, Wednesday and her friends managed to stop one villain, but an even bigger threat continued to lurk in the shadows of Jericho with Isaac, Tyler, and Francoise at large.

The stakes heading into the finale were already high with Wednesday’s premonition warning that an Addams family member had been marked for death, but Tim Burton and the team managed to up the ante even further in the closing moments of the penultimate episode. While all eyes were on stopping Principal Dort, Isaac managed to sneak into Nevermore undetected and abducted an unsuspecting Pugsley.

With Pugsley’s life on the line, could the women of the Addams family put their differences aside to save his life and prevent Wednesday’s premonition from coming to fruition?

Warning spoilers ahead for the Wednesday season 2 finale!

What happened to Isaac Night?

All season long, there has been a mystery surrounding the circumstances of Isaac Night’s death. After dancing around the cause of Isaac’s death, the season 2 finale finally revealed just how Isaac’s life came to an end before Pugsley brought him back to life at the top of the season.

At the behest of Weems, Morticia and Wednesday realize they come together with Grandmama if they have any hopes of tapping into their Raven abilities and figure out what Isaac wants from Pugsley. As the three women join hands around a crystal ball, Wednesday receives a vision of the past in which a young Morticia and Gomez are dumping Isaac’s dead body into the grave under the skull tree.

Wednesday turns to her mother for answers to their true involvement in his death, which leads to Morticia finally revealing what happened all those years ago.

Mortica and Gomez were at the lab the night of his accident, but not for the reason one might think. Isaac was certain the machine he built would cure his sister and rid her of her Hyde persona; however, his machine required a great deal of power, and so he turned to Gomez for help.

Back then, Gomez was just as electrifying as Pugsley and he was more than happy to use his abilities to help his friend. It turned out to be a trap, with Isaac’s true intentions being to kill Gomez and drain him of his powers to save Francoise. Mortica arrived in time to sabotage the machine, which sent it into a frenzy and led to an explosion in the lab. Francoise survived, Isaac died, and it left Gomez without his abilities. Following his death, they dumped his body in the grave intended for Gomez’s body.

After this revelation comes to light, Wednesday deduces that Isaac’s looking to use Pugsley’s abilities to try to fuel the machine, and that the gravestone was Pugsley’s.

Thing’s origin story is revealed in a jaw-dropping twist

Using Eugene as his messenger, Isaac sends a message to Wednesday in the form of a snowglobe containing the skull tree with the word “midnight” written underneath. With the meeting place and time set, Wednesday ignores her mother’s warning and walks right into Isaac’s trap.

Wednesday attempts to pull a fast one on Isaac by bringing Thing with her into the woods and manning him with a crossbow. When Thing takes his shot, Isaac deflects the arrow with his right hand as Tyler emerges from the woods and traps Thing in a box.

In a twist we never saw coming, Thing’s origin story is finally revealed as we learn that Thing is actually Isaac Night’s right hand! Via flashback, we learn that Morticia severed Isaac’s hand in her effort to save Gomez. The power surge that triggered the explosion that claimed Isaac’s life somehow animated his severed hand and gave birth to Thing in the process.

It seems that Isaac spotted Thing when he first passed through Nevermore and had concocted a plan to reattach him to his wrist to make himself whole once more. In reattaching Thing to his wrist, Isaac regained control of his hand and seemed to kill Thing in the process, or so we thought.

Who dies in the Wednesday season 2 finale?

From there, that’s when things get intense as the episode brings about a series of near-death moments as well as a pair of shocking deaths.

Our first fakeout comes when Isaac buries Wednesday alive below the skull tree before proceeding to his lab. Fortunately, Agnes had followed Wednesday out to the woods and was able to get help from Enid with the pair saving Wednesday just in the nick of time. However, to do so, Enid had to transform into a werewolf under the full moon, which meant she’d be risking her own life to save her friend and would be unable to transform back.

As Isaac readies his machine, we learn that it’s not Francoise who he’ll be using it on as the plan is to use it on Tyler to try to give him a normal life. Isaac activates the machine, but Wednesday arrives in time to stop the experiment. In a shocking twist, Wednesday spares Tyler’s life and simply sets him free rather than killing him. She then frees Pugsley as Tyler and his mom come to blows in a Hyde vs. Hyde fight.

In the chaos, Wednesday manages to destroy the machine, which triggers an explosion that rocks the lab and also sends Tyler and his mom flying back. As a result of the explosion, Francoise falls to her death and is impaled by a statue down below in the courtyard. It looks like Morticia has died in the explosion, but that proves to be another fakeout as she, Wednesday, Pugsley, and Gomez survive the explosion.

Isaac also survived the explosion and is determined to get revenge on Wednesday. Just when it looks like Isaac might actually succeed, Thing fights back and regains control. A fight ensues, and Thing ends up killing Isaac, ripping his mechanical heart from his chest before separating himself from Isaac’s corpse.

Wednesday season 2 ending explained

As the season draws to a close, there are three key burning questions we’re left to stew over as we wait for season 3 to arrive.

First, there’s the matter of what’s to come next for Tyler. After Wednesday spares his life, Tyler escapes into the night and we next see him visiting the graves of his parents. While at their gravesite, he gets an unexpected visit from Professor Capri, who arrives to extend a unique offer to him. Rather than proposing to be his new master as Tyler first assumes, Capri invites him to join a pack of Hydes she’s helped to assemble. It turns out that while she is a werewolf, her father was a Hyde, and she’s taken it upon herself to help displaced Hydes such as Tyler. The season ends with Tyler and Capri riding off, but to where we don’t know.

Tyler and Capri aren’t the only ones driving off into the proverbial sunset as the season ends. After stopping Isaac and saving her family, Wednesday sets out to save her found family and is determined to track down Enid. Agnes informs her that Enid was last spotted heading toward Canada, and Wednesday is determined to find her friend and try to help. Given what we learned about young alphas being potentially stuck in their werewolf form after transforming during a full moon, we’re eager to see if Wednesday will not only be able to find her friend but help Enid return to her human form in season 3.

As the season ends, Wednesday hits the road with Uncle Fester and Thing to follow her lead in hopes of finding Enid. However, that’s not the final twist thrown our way.

When reading through a journal from her Aunt Ophelia, gifted to her by her mother before they parted ways, Wednesday gets a vision of her aunt, who we learn is alive! Not only is she alive, but we learn that she’s being held captive by Grandmama, raising the question of why she’s been locked away and whether Wednesday will be able to locate her come season 3!

Wednesday season 2 is streaming now on Netflix.
