After a weird and wild journey through the Wasteland and the gambling den of New Vegas, Fallout season 2 is at an end. "The Strip" is an ambitious episode that ties up a lot of loose ends, but for every one that the series capped off this season, it left three more open for the future. So it goes without saying, if you finish watching this episode, you'll almost certainly be curious about the status of Fallout season 3, and when it will come along to answer all those burning questions we still have after the season 2 finale.

The good news is that Fallout was renewed for season 3 very early by Prime Video; all the way back in May 2025, more than six months before season 2 even premiered. Plans are in place for the show to potentially run up to five or six seasons, so long as the audience support is there for it.

That means that Prime Video has made the good decision to keep the ball rolling on Fallout, which will hopefully cut down the wait time between seasons. Considering how commonplace two year waits have become between installments of big budget sci-fi and fantasy shows, any way to chip down at that gap is a good thing for viewers and the studio alike.

When does Fallout season 3 start filming?

As of this writing, Fallout season 3 hasn't begun filming yet. However, we do know when it is scheduled to start, thanks to the film industry news source Productionlist.com. They have Fallout season 3 scheduled to begin filming on May 1, 2026 in Santa Clarita, California.

In the meantime, Bethesda game studio head Todd Howard has confirmed that writing is underway on Fallout season 3. So while the cameras won't start rolling for a few more months, pre-production on the series is proceeding steadily.

When does Fallout season 3 come out?

While Prime Video hasn't yet announced a release date for Fallout season 3, we can make some educated guesses about its release window. Fallout began filming season 2 in November 2024, a little more than a year before it premiered. That means that at the earliest, we should expect Fallout season 3 to arrive sometime in early to mid-2027. Given how smoothly production seems to be rolling from season 2 into the third season, there's also a chance that time could shorten.

What will happen in Fallout season 3?

Obviously, Prime Video hasn't yet released any sort of synopsis about what's in store in season 3. But now that the season 2 finale is out, it paints a picture for what lies ahead. The largest things established by the season 2 finale are some of the villains; namely, the Legion and the Enclave. Both are poised to play a larger role in the show's future, with the Legion marching on New Vegas and the Encalve firing up for Phase Two of their plot for the Wasteland.

Fallout season 2 also introduced a super mutant played by Ron Perlman, who hinted at a resistance faction of mutants preparing to take on the Enclave. If we explore more of the Enclave in season 3, it stands to reason we'll learn more about that mutant faction as well.

It also seems likely that The Ghoul will be traveling again, this time to Colorado in search of his wife and daughter. Meanwhile, Lucy and Maximus left off in the heart of New Vegas, while NCR forces stabilize the city from a pack of Deathclaws. I expected New Vegas to primarily feature as a season 2 location only, but given the finale, it seems more than plausible that it will appear in season 3 as well.

Of course, we'll also undoubtedly see more of Vaults 32 and 33. It wouldn't be Fallout without some Vaults, would it?
