Wait, why does Baelor Targaryen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have dark hair?

No, there’s no scandal to blame this time.

It’s time to meet the Targaryens in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 2. The Game of Thrones show returns this evening, continuing the journey of Dunk (Peter Claffey) and Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) as the former attempts to figure out a way to get into the tourney. Along the way, princes arrive at Ashford, and Dunk’s apparent crush on a puppeteer/painter named Tanselle (Tanzyn Crawford) grows.

One of the biggest moments in episode 2 is the arrival of the Targaryens, who currently rule the Seven Kingdoms. This includes cousins Aerion (Finn Bennett) and Valarr Targaryen (Oscar Morgan), along with Maekar (Sam Spruell) and is brother Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen (Bertie Carvel), the latter being the Hand to King Daeron II and heir to the Iron Throne.

Explaining Baelor’s lineage

Like most Targaryens, this group knows how to make an impression, and that’s especially true for Baelor, who viewers likely noticed doesn’t have the signature Targaryen silver-blonde hair. In House of the Dragon, we know that Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy)’s eldest sons, Jacaerys (Harry Collett) and Lucerys (Elliot Grihault), have brown hair because of her affair with Ser Harwin Strong (Ryan Corr), but that isn’t the case here.

In actuality, Baelor’s hair is brown because his mother was a Dornish princess named Myriah Martell. She had dark hair and dark eyes, typical for people of Dorne who live in the south of Westeros, and these traits were passed down to one of her sons. Baelor’s father is King Daeron II Targaryen, who, although has not been introduced in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is described as having silver hair.

Along with the darker hair, Baelor has heterochromia in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms; a condition where his eyes are two different colors.

While we might be used to Targaryens marrying cousins and siblings just to keep the bloodline pure in House of the Dragon, it’s not the case for the full family tree throughout the years. As such, we’ve gotten a handful of Targaryens with dark hair, including Rhaenys Targaryen—who actually has silver hair in House of the Dragon—Baelor Targaryen, and, of course, Jon Snow (a.k.a. Aegon Targaryen), to name a few.

While we don’t see a lot of him in this episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Valarr Targaryen, the son of Baelor, also has brown hair. During the joust, we see his darker hair, but we know from the books that he has darker hair plus a silver-white streak going through it. He won’t play as pivotal a role in the story as his father, but he’s another example of a Targaryen without the signature hair color in this show alone.
