George R.R. Martin Honored on Field at Northwestern vs Penn State game

Over the weekend, George R.R. Martin was honored at Northwestern, receiving the alumni award from the Medill School of Journalism. (He earned his bachelor’s degree there in 1970, and also received a master’s degree from the university). He also caught a football game on Saturday, between Northwestern and Penn State. As we all know, Martin is a rabid football fan, so the latter part was probably as enjoyable as the first. (Northwestern won too, 23-21.)

Athletic director Jim Phillips brought the author onto the field and presented him an honorary football helmet. The Daily Northwestern has a photo.

Northwestern’s marching band apparently played the Game of Thrones theme at halftime, but sadly, it hasn’t been posted yet. If you need your awesome marching band fix, check out Penn State doing its own take on the theme last October.

Martin wasn’t the only big name in attendance this weekend from HBO. Julia-Louise Dreyfus, another alumni of Northwestern, and star of the comedy Veep, was also on hand for the game.

Veep of Thrones, eh? That sounds like a crossover episode I would be very interested in seeing. If for no other reason than to see Littlefinger and Varys duke it out over Selena Meyer’s next move. HBO, make it happen!
