Martin’s NotABlog Previews the 2017 Song of Ice and Fire Calendar

We may only be only six weeks into 2016, but over at George R.R. Martin’s NotABlog, the author is already looking ahead to next year. In a post by “Minion Raya,” written on Martin’s behalf, it’s announced that the Song of Ice and Fire calendar for 2017 is officially in production.
The post includes a preview of one of the pieces of artwork from the calendar, which is being done by French artist Didier Graffet. Graffet is known for his fantasy artwork, including stuff based on the works of Jules Verne. This is a departure from the 2016 calendar, which was done by Magali Villeneuve, who also did all the artwork for 2014’s “The World of Ice and Fire” companion coffee table book. But then again, Martin seems to trade out his calendar artists every year. 2015’s calendar was done by Donato Giancola, 2014’s by Gary Gianni, etc.
Though the calendar has only started production, we’ve been given a glimpse of the cover art. Check it out:
The NotABlog also shares one of the pieces Graffet displayed this year at the World Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention. As Raya points out, the artwork has “no relation to Westeros,” but Martin has it hanging in his office library. This was the painting that put Graffet on the author’s radar as a potential collaborator.
It may not be related to A Song of Ice and Fire, but it looks like it could be, and gives us a taste of Graffet’s style and what we might expect from the artwork on next year’s calendar.
