The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend, etc. One such period in Westerosi prehistory is known as the Dawn Age. That time was back around 12,000 BCE, two thousand years before the Age of Heroes, and two thousand more before the last time that the Long Night came, and men rose up to fight the great White Walker army and the Others who came down from the Lands of Always Winter. Now that time is coming again.

But in order for us to understand it, we have to go back in history and see how it all began. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Crap! Spoilers!

Tonight, The Three Eyed Raven took Bran into the past again. We went way back….all the way back to the very beginning, to the time when Men were first coming to Westeros, and the Children of the Forest were under siege. They were desperate, the Children. They were losing the war to Men, and they were losing their homes and their loved ones. This was war, and they needed a weapon.

And so, they created one. An unstoppable weapon, made from ice, a foe that men could not stop, and who would use their own dead against them by raising up their corpses to join the battle.

Clearly, the Children regret what has happened. Like many weapons created in the heat of war, there were unforeseen consequences of their actions, and ultimately they created a power, the Night’s King, that they could not control. Perhaps that is why they are so hell-bent on helping Bran and Meera now, because they feel like they need to make up to mankind for their mistakes.
