Another character returns for Game of Thrones Season 7

Game of Thrones Season 6 featured a long string of characters not seen in years returning to the show. Bran Stark, Meera Reed, Hodor, Yara Greyjoy, and the Hound returned after sitting out Season 5. Balon Greyjoy, Walder Frey, and the Blackfish turned up for the first time since Season 3. Even Benjen Stark, not seen since Season 1, dropped by. And that trend looks like it’ll continue into Season 7. Game of Thrones appears to be tying up old threads before it ends.

Another character who came back in Season 6: Edmure Tully, played by actor Tobias Menzies. Before Season 6, we last saw Edmure in Season 3, when he married Roslin Frey at the Red Wedding. In the intervening seasons, Walder Frey kept him locked up, and only let him out so he could threaten to kill him in front of the Blackfish, who was occupying Riverrun. Thanks to Jaime Lannister, the Freys were able to retake the castle without bloodshed (minus the Blackfish’s death). Edmure’s cooperation was important to that operation. His purpose fulfilled, Walder Frey threw Edmure back in prison again.

What happens next? We may find out in Season 7. A fan snapped a picture of a gentlemen waiting for Menzies at a London airport. His flight was returning from Belfast, Northern Ireland, the filming hub for Game of Thrones Season 7.

While this isn’t ironclad proof that Edmure will turn up in Season 7, Menzies being in Belfast recently certainly points in that direction. (Addison Lee is a London-based cab company, by the way.) And so far as we know, the Riverrun set is still up at Corbet-Banbridge, so scenes set there are a distinct possibility, although we’re not sure if Walder Frey imprisoned Edmure there or brought him back to the Twins.

So what might Edmure get up to in Season 7? Walder Frey, his jailor, is now dead by Arya’s hand, as are two of his sons. Might Arya set her Uncle Edmure free?
