If you've seen Project Hail Mary, you know that Rocky is the heart and soul of the movie. The spider-like Eridian engineer, brought to life through incredible puppetry by James Ortiz and his team, has given us some of the most memorable lines in recent sci-fi cinema.
From his endearing communication quirks to his heartbreaking displays of loyalty, Rocky's words have embedded themselves in our hearts (and our daily vocabulary). Here are 17 Rocky lines that will absolutely stay with us forever.
17. "How do you know when the hug is done?"
When Grace gets overwhelmed with emotion after Rocky offers to lend him the astrophage from his own ship, literally giving Grace years of his life so his human friend can make the trip back to Earth instead of the original one-way suicide mission, Grace asks Rocky to come close. He hugs Rocky's hexagonal ball spacesuit in what might be one of the most touching moment in the film. Rocky, utterly clueless about this human custom, asks, "Okay, what's happening? What should I do?" Grace explains that a hug isn't usually done alone and tells Rocky to get closer.
They kind of awkwardly hug against the wall, and then Rocky asks the most innocent, hilarious question: "How do you know when the hug is done?" Grace's answer is that you just feel it, followed by Rocky asking if he's feeling it now, and Grace's honest "no," is both funny and devastatingly sweet.
16. "Thumbs up, baby" (And it's actually a thumbs down)
When Grace and Rocky plan the Adrian sample collection mission, they face a major challenge. Their ship can't land on Adrian because it would catch fire in the turbulent atmosphere. But then Rocky comes up with a brilliant solution that he would make a chain kilometers long so they can fly closer to Adrian and Grace can reel the line back with the sample collector attached to it.
Grace says it would work and Rocky says "thumbs up, baby" showing him what he thinks is a thumbs up... except it's a thumbs down. With one of three claws pointing down instead of up, it's adorable, hilarious and somehow stays with you long after the movie ends. It's one of those perfect little moments that captures the charm of their cross-species friendship.
15. "Rocky hate Mark"
This is actually Ryan Gosling's favorite Rocky line in the entire movie, and it was completely improvised. During a quiet conversation about their lives back home, Grace mentions he once had a girlfriend who thought he had his head in the clouds. Now she's with someone named Mark. Rocky's response is immediate and perfect: "Rocky hate Mark." It's his instant loyalty without needing any context or justification. His friend got hurt, so Rocky's on his side. Period. The comedic timing is flawless and the sincerity is absolutely adorable.
The backstory makes it even better. Gosling's longtime costumer, Mark Avery, was standing next to the camera during filming. While improvising the scene with James Ortiz (who performs Rocky), Gosling spontaneously used his friend's name. Ortiz fired back in character instantly, and they did it just to make Mark laugh. Nobody expected it to make the final cut, but it did and now it's one of the most quoted lines from the movie. It perfectly captures Rocky's ride-or-die friendship and the automatic, unconditional support. Rocky's got Grace's back, and he hates Mark on principle.
14. "Fist my bump"
This is easily one of the most hilarious and memorable lines that appears multiple times throughout the film. The first time happens when Grace shows Rocky a fist bump on the other side of the xenonite panel. Rocky mimics him bumping him from the other side and Grace tells him it's a "fist bump." Rocky repeats it, but he says "fist my bump" instead. Grace tries to correct him but Rocky insists it's the same. Grace argues it's not, but Rocky doesn't budge.
Much later, after the terrifying Adrian sample collection disaster and Rocky's recovery, when Grace shows him the finalized taumoeba breeder tech that Rocky originally designed, Rocky realizes they can both go home. He asks Grace to "fist my bump." Grace still says it's not right, but he'll do it anyway. The running gag is endearing and shows how some things, even grammatically incorrect ones, become exclusively sacred between friends.
13. "Grace question is dumb"
Rocky is a no-filter critic, and oh boy, do we love it. Initially, when they're collaborating via the xenonite tunnel that Rocky docked onto the Hail Mary (pressurized and stabilized on Grace's end with air pressure and oxygen — what a dude, right?), they work on communicating. Rocky insists that Grace build a model of the Tau Ceti system so they can make plans. Rocky already has one on his side of the tunnel. He's a magician engineer who makes things out of thin air, and of course he's got five limbs, after all.
Grace is still struggling to set up his model after Rocky insisted, and Grace questions whether they even need a model. Rocky says they need to investigate why the star is not dying and plan accordingly, and for that, they need a model. So, "Grace question is dumb." It's the kind of blunt assessment that only Rocky can deliver and somehow makes you laugh every time.
12. "Only us" (Rocky corrects Grace)
This moment happens during one of their initial communications when Rocky reveals he's not happy because he's alone and has been so for long. He explains that he is the only one remaining alive from the original crew of 23 Eridians on his ship. Grace shares that he too is the only one on the Hail Mary when Rocky asks how many humans are on Grace's ship. Grace says that it's only him now. Rocky corrects that saying, "Only us."
It's a small but powerful moment as Rocky reminds Grace that he isn't alone anymore. They have each other. In just two words, Rocky redefines loneliness and friendship across species, across solar systems, across everything that should separate them.
11. "My portable Earth thinking machine"
This comes much later in the movie, but it's absolutely perfect in capturing Rocky's wonder and excitement. When Grace gives him a couple of parting gifts, one of them being Grace's laptop before they would go separate ways, partying in the Hail Mary's screen room, Rocky's excitement is off the charts.
He dubs the laptop his "portable Earth thinking machine," and honestly? We've been calling our laptops that for days now. It's the kind of phrase that perfectly captures Rocky's perspective on human technology while also being hilariously accurate. Rocky's joy in this moment is infectious and reminds us of the wonder in everyday things we take for granted.
10. "Rocky, Grace, big science"
This line happens when Rocky arrives at the Hail Mary's door in his ball spacesuit, unannounced, and is excited as hell. As he sees all the human stuff and explores the ship, he's thrilled to be collaborating with Grace soon.
"Rocky, Grace, big science" is how he expresses his intellectual excitement. It's simple, enthusiastic and shows just how much he values their scientific partnership. It's the beginning of the greatest (lived-in) science bromance in cinema history, summed up in four words.
9. "Good, Good"
This is Rocky's staple response, recurring throughout the movie. It's his seal of approval whenever something goes according to plan or things are on schedule.
He says it with such consistency that you can't help but hear it in James Ortiz's voice long after the credits roll (and is everyone using it so much more frequently now, or is it just me?). "Good, good" becomes a mantra, a reassurance, a moment of shared satisfaction between two scientists trying to save their worlds. It's amazing how two simple words can become so iconic.
8. "I go home six years slow"
This is one of the most emotional moments in the entire movie. When Grace and Rocky are making plans to collect a sample from Adrian's atmosphere, Grace lets slip that he isn't going back to Earth and it's a one-way ticket for him.
Rocky immediately pushes back against this, saying he won't let Grace die and that Grace hadn't told him. Grace says he's made peace with it, given he got to meet Rocky and do all this amazing stuff together, and gets up to leave the room. Then Rocky calls after him and asks how much astrophage he would need. Rocky says that he can give and offers millions of kilograms of his own fuel, saying "I go home six years slow."
Think about that. Rocky had been out there for over forty-three years already. He could finally go back to Erid, back to his mate Adrian who's been waiting for him. But he refuses to let his friend die. He wants Grace to go home too, and he's ready to make that sacrifice, to wait another six years to see his planet if it means Grace gets to live, gets to return to Earth. It's devastating, beautiful and the purest expression of friendship imaginable.
7. "Oh, humor. Confusing."
When Grace is about to go out to the Hail Mary's hull for the Adrian sample collection scene, he says "Fun". Rocky warns him it's dangerous and asks why would it be fun. Grace says it was humor. Rocky's response? "Oh, humor. Confusing."
It's become the perfect one-liner for jokes you don't get or jokes that aren't funny. Almost everyone who's seen the movie in my circle, siblings and coworkers, has been using this. It's a fantastic response to failed humor, and it perfectly captures the challenge of cross-cultural (or in this case, cross-species) comedy.
6. "Dirty, dirty, dirty…. This room for garbage?"
When Rocky arrives in his ball spacesuit, unannounced, and starts barrelling through the Hail Mary, Grace tries to pick up stuff behind him because the ship is kind of a mess. Rocky is not impressed with the level of scatter at all and his disdain is palpable as he goes, "dirty, dirty, dirty." Grace defends himself saying he wasn't exactly expecting visitors and when Rocky sees the lab with all its equipment scattered around, his response is savage: "This room for garbage?" Grace has to explain it's actually the lab.
Rocky then declares that he'll build a workshop there, "so much room for Rocky and so little space for Grace." Rocky is such a diva, and we absolutely love him for it. The repetition of "dirty" has become its own meme, perfect for commenting on messy spaces everywhere.
5. "It's not enough"
When Grace asks how long Rocky and Adrian have been together, Rocky says an exact number without missing a beat. 189.3 years. Then he adds, heartbreakingly, "It's not enough." It's similar to the idea that even eons with someone you love is never enough.
The emotion in how Rocky says his mate's name is so touching. It's such a powerful line about love transcending time, about how even centuries aren't sufficient when you're with your soulmate. This simple statement might be one of the most romantic lines in the film.
4. "Need word: to risk self to help another"
When Rocky asks for a word that means risking yourself to help another as he tries to convey that Grace is very brave, Grace's first response is "dumb" but types "brave" into the translation software. This exchange becomes incredibly important because both Rocky and Grace embody this definition of bravery throughout the film.
In the end, when they say their emotional goodbyes after the taumoeba is collected and they both have enough to save their planets (but Grace would of course turn his ship around later to save his buddy when he realizes Rocky could be in trouble), Rocky tells Grace that he's the bravest human he's ever met. He says he cracked a joke, given Grace is the only human he's ever met. It's Rocky's attempt at humor and it lands perfectly, mixing the emotional moment with levity.
3. "Rocky watch crew die, could not fix. Grace say Grace will die, Rocky fix."
When Grace says he can't take the astrophage from Rocky because it's too much, as it would cost Rocky years getting back to Erid, Rocky delivers this devastating line. He shares his perspective. He watched his crew die and couldn't fix it. But Grace says Grace will die and Rocky can fix that. So he will.
It's so moving because Rocky is revealing his trauma, his survivor's guilt and his determination not to lose another friend. He's been powerless before, but not this time. This time he has the power to save someone and he's going to use it. It's sad, emotional, uplifting and intense all at once, the kind of line that makes you tear up every single time.
2. "Amaze, Amaze, Amaze"
This recurring line appears throughout the film whenever something goes great, and it's become the catchphrase. Rocky says it with such genuine enthusiasm that you can't help but smile. It's everywhere now, in reviews, in social media posts, in everyday conversations.
"Amaze, amaze, amaze" has become the way fans sign off on anything related to Project Hail Mary, and honestly, the film is amaze, amaze, amaze. You cannot ever forget this line. It will indeed stay with you forever. It's pure joy condensed into three words.
1. "Grace Rocky Save Stars"
This is perhaps the line that sums up Project Hail Mary better than anything else, and it will be the one line you remember whenever you think about the movie. This message appears on screen when Grace and Rocky are still communicating via the software that translates Rocky's musical chords into English text. Grace reads it off the screen and it's perfect in its simplicity and scope.
Not "Grace saves Earth" or "Rocky saves Erid", but "Grace Rocky save stars." Together. As a team. As friends. It's the ultimate distillation of what the movie is about, after all. Friendship, collaboration, sacrifice and two beings from different worlds coming together to save everything that matters. This line, above all others, will stay with us forever.
Project Hail Mary is playing now in theaters.
