Doctor Who News: Sixth Doctor’s ‘Last Adventure’ Trailer, New Series 9 Image
By Barry Rice
Big Finish releases a trailer for the Sixth Doctor’s last adventure, BBC puts out a new Doctor Who Series 9 image, plus Matt Smith as Prince Philip, & more!
Happy Tuesday, Doctor Who Watchers! It was another light news day, but there are at least two major stories worth talking about.
First up, Big Finish has released a trailer and new story details for Doctor Who: The Sixth Doctor – The Last Adventure, September’s upcoming audio drama that will finally reveal the events that led to the Sixth Doctor’s regeneration. (No word on whether they’ll explain why he suddenly looked like Sylvester McCoy in a blonde wig, though.)
More from Doctor Who
- Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor Who Christmas special is a “complete reinvention”
- Ncuti Gatwa is “so nervous” to take on Doctor Who role
- The Doctor and Donna are better than ever in “Wild Blue Yonder”
- Take the Black: House of the Dragon season 2 trailer hints, the Fallout show, and more
- Jodie Whittaker didn’t pick up on any of the hate for her version of the Doctor
The other big news is a new Series 9 promotional image released by the BBC, featuring the Twelfth Doctor and Clara in action with a classic action-movie explosion behind them. You can see part of the image at the top of this story, but click here for the full thing (trust me, you want to see the whole thing — it makes a great new Windows 10 desktop background).
Our own output here at Doctor Who Watch was a bit light yesterday, but we featured a story in favor of a female Doctor, and part three of James Aggas’ I, Davros series review.
Other stories from around the internet this morning include an amazing (but likely expensive) Doctor Who partwork covering the entire 52 year history, defensive articles in favor of both the Sixth Doctor and the decisive Eleventh Doctor episode, ‘Let’s Kill Hitler,’ plus some killer fan art, and our first look at Matt Smith in costume as Prince Philip for the new Netflix series, The Crown.
First, here’s a look at the top stories this morning from right here at Doctor Who Watch:
Doctor Who: The Time for a Female Doctor is Approaching – David Hill
"The idea of a female Doctor should not be a problem either. It is likely just the natural progression of the character, given that even Time Lords are not entirely one specific gender. If the fact that any character can change is a part of what makes Doctor Who such a great show, why would gender be static?"
REVIEW: I, Davros: Corruption (Doctor Who Audio Spin-Off) – James Aggas
"It’s not just the characters or the story that makes I, Davros such a fantastic spin-off, but the number of themes it explores along the way. Themes of betrayal, of love, of revenge, of destiny – themes not only explored in just this episode alone but also covered in many classic epics. These not only help to give I, Davros its own distinct identity compared to other Doctor Who spin-offs, but almost makes it feel like a historical tale, despite the clear science-fiction setting."
And now for the best Doctor Who stories from around the internet:
Doctor Who: The Sixth Doctor – The Last Adventure Trailer Revealed – Big Finish
"Coming in September, Doctor Who: The Sixth Doctor – The Last Adventure tells the emotional ending of Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor, who faces his final battle with the Valeyard (Michael Jayston), the malevolent distillation of the Doctor’s negative impulses."
Doctor Who: The Complete History Partwork Goes Nationwide Next Month!
– Kasterborous
In Defence of the Sixth Doctor’s Era – Warped Factor
"The rest of season 22 is a lot stronger than the polls would suggest. The Mark of the Rani is superbly directed by Sarah Hellings, with an imaginative plot. Kate O’Mara is one the best villainess’ to grace Doctor Who, with her brilliantly catty remarks on the Master’s continual obsession with the Doctor. The Two Doctors is far from perfect, but to see Troughton and Hines together again is an absolute delight, and Jaqueline Pearce is, as always, wonderful as Chessene."
This Amazing ‘Doctor Who’ Fan-Art Will Put a Smile on Your Face – Moviepilot
Is a classic villain returning to Doctor Who? – Radio Times
John Levene’s Benton Returns in Time’s Champion Audiobook – Kasterborous
"Originally published in 2008 as a charity venture in aid of British Heart Foundation, the book was written by Chris McKeon but based on notes by Craig Hinton (Synthespians™) before his death. This audio adaptation features exclusive revisions by the original author and is presented as a full cast audio book."
Let’s Kill Hitler: A Defence & Analysis (Part 1) – Doctor Who TV
"This episode subtly sets up a very surprising comparison between the Doctor and – remarkably – Adolf Hitler. Both individuals differ on almost every possible conceivable aspect, but there is a common theme between them that this episode identifies, which forms a part of the brilliant character development arc for the Doctor in Series 6."
That’s all the news that’s fit to print this Tuesday morning. Have a great day and we’ll see you back here tomorrow!
