The production team builds a theater set in Girona, plans big scene in Almería
By Dan Selcke
Thespians are coming. The Game of Thrones production team has been hard at work over the past week setting up sets in the Spanish city of Girona, most of which look like they will be used to stand in for parts of Braavos. Now, the Diari de Girona reports that the team is building a set for “a stage in a theater” in the Plaça dels Jurats.
SPOILERS FOR THE WINDS OF WINTER FOLLOW
Those who have read the sample chapter entitled “Mercy” from The Winds of Winter may remember that Arya works at a theater in Braavos under the watchful eye of a Faceless Man, or Faceless Men collaborator, named Izembaro. Also, one of the Season 6 casting calls was looking for a “leading actress.” Taking all this together, it seems likely that this set will serve as the theater in Braavos where Arya furthers her assassin training.
Meanwhile, preparation continues apace in other areas of Girona, including the Old Quarter and the Arab baths. La Plaça dels Jurats is one of the new areas to be closed off, along with the French gardens, along with Maria Laffite square and the Paseo de la Reina Joana. Diari de Girona has more pictures of set constructions throughout the city.

Preparations are also underway elsewhere in Spain, specifically in the province of Almería. Ideal reports that the production will shoot some kind of large scene requiring 400 extras (which seems to be the magic number this year) near or in the village of Carboneras, which had previously been confirmed as a shooting location. A local sports arena may be used on account of the enormous number of bodies involved. Filming will take place on October 18 and 19.
Carboneras is also the home of the tower of Mesa Roldán, a stately old edifice that has also been confirmed as a filming location. It’s not clear what exactly it’ll be used for, but it’s pretty easy to picture it standing in for some ruined tower in Essos.
Almería is the final place where the production team will shoot before it completes its tour of Spain. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for any more nuggets of information that may drop before filming begins there on October 10th.
