George R.R. Martin is much more than just A Song of Ice and Fire. The guy has many interests, from baseball to science fiction to cinema. When he throws himself into one of these interests rather than work on his novels, A Song of Ice and Fire fans can sometimes grow impatient, but we should remember that the guy does have a right to a life.
That said, sometimes it can feel like he’s baiting us. For example, Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Martin will appear in the second season of Z Nation, a show on Syfy about a world that’s been torn apart by a zombie apocalypse (not to be confused with that other show about a world that’s been torn apart by a zombie apocalypse). Martin will appear in the eighth episode of the season, and will play a zombie version of himself. He’s been tied to his desk and forced to work on his books by a character called the Collector, who captures celebrity zombies.
If you’re wondering, Z Nation is a drama.
Martin offered a typically sardonic soundbite about his cameo: “I just want to prove to my fans that even in the Zombie Apocalypse, the Song of Ice and Fire books will still come out!”
Okay, well, maybe if you wanted them to come out, you would spend more time working on them and less time fooling around on Syfy and doing adorable photo shoots where you dress up as a zombie and stage a phony book signing!
But see, that’s the kind of thing we really have no right to be perturbed about, because he’s a human being and he has hobbies and he’s allowed to enjoy himself and blah blah blah. The second season of Z Nation premieres tonight. Martin’s cameo better be hilarious.
And yes, calling his fake book A Promise of Spring is cute.
