Doctor Who Could Finally Have River Song as a Companion
By David Hill
Typically on Doctor Who, when a companion leaves and another one is brought in to take their place, the changeover happens at the end of the season. While the new companion can come in at the start of the following season, sometimes those beginnings or departures happen during the Christmas episodes, allowing for a holiday tug at the heartstrings.
Perhaps the same event will happen this year. With Jenna Coleman rumored to be departing from Doctor Who to take the lead role in the ITV series Victoria, a new companion would be needed to take her place. Well, as it turns out, there is one character that will be a part of this season’s Christmas Special that could fit that role – River Song.
It is a role that many fans of the show have wanted to see her take on for some time. While River as a companion likely would not last for more than a season, given her own meanderances through time and space, it would be fascinating to see what the interaction between her and the Doctor would be like for more than one episode. After all, they are married and River’s Book of Spoilers has pointed to their adventures together in the future.
More from Doctor Who
- Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor Who Christmas special is a “complete reinvention”
- Ncuti Gatwa is “so nervous” to take on Doctor Who role

- Jodie Whittaker didn’t pick up on any of the hate for her version of the Doctor
Perhaps that point she has referenced is now. River had mentioned knowing the Doctor when he was much older, and the Twelfth Doctor would certainly fit that profile. This incarnation of the Doctor, a more sarcastic and cutting being who is at his best during moments of action, would seemingly pair well with River, a wanderer in her own right.
Finally, the Doctor could have someone who would be a true match for his general sarcasm and viewpoint. While there may be a kinder, gentler Doctor this series, one should probably not expect that drastic a departure from the Twelfth Doctor we have come to know. Instead, it may be best that he has a companion that can create a true balance to this side. River, should Clara indeed leave Doctor Who, could be exactly that.
Having River Song as a true companion on Doctor Who, taking treks in the TARDIS and journeying with the Doctor on their adventures together, would truly be a joy to watch. Perhaps we will get to see that in Series Ten.
