Vanity Fair is no stranger to Game of Thrones humor. Their Game of Thrones Quick Draw series was quite entertaining, and served as a nice run-up to Season 5. Now they’re back at it, with a nicely done video entitled “If Game of Thrones Was Set in Silicon Valley.” Check it out.
I like how this version of Westeros portrays the old-guard of the internet—AOL, MSN, Yahoo—as ancient kingdoms who war for power with Google and Apple, the former of which is made up of warriors “fierce of spirit and nerdy of demeanor.” Then you have Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg, who is a Roose Bolton-type figure intent on “collecting his enemy’s faces in a book.” Meanwhile, the social media platforms form “unholy alliances” and vow to persist until every last status is shared.
So let’s try and identify each company, and compare them to a House or group from Game of Thrones.
- MSN, AOL, and Yahoo are the First Men and Andals.
- Google is obviously House Lannister, right?
- Apple is House Stark.
- As mentioned, Facebook is clearly House Bolton.
- The social media platforms have to be the wildlings because they do not kneel…while taking selfies, duh.
This particular war for Westeros is not finished, and who will win the battle for the Nerdy-Iron Throne? As the narrator says, that answer is still up in the cloud…oh, how clever of you, Vanity Fair.
