Doctor Who: Is the Doctor’s Daughter, Jenny, Dead or Alive?

Over the decades, there have been many Jennys in the Whoniverse. The most mysterious of them all, however, is the Doctor’s daughter, played by Doctor Who royalty, Georgia Moffett. The only time that her character has ever appeared on the show was in Series 4, Episode 7 ‘The Doctor’s Daughter.’ She flew away in a shuttle and then… ? She also had a cameo in the eleventh issue of the comic Prisoners of Time. Whovians have long pondered the possibility of seeing her again on the show.

On November 14, 2015, at the Doctor Who Festival in London, a fan asked the panel if the Doctor remembers Jenny. The following is Peter Capaldi’s reply:

"The Doctor never forgets about anyone, but there are a lot people – a lot of time and space in the cosmos – and he hasn’t got time to deal with everyone at every moment of the day. But, no, he hasn’t forgotten about her."

Steven Moffat told of a conversation with Russell T Davies:

"I’ve got Russell’s answer because that comes from Russell’s era of the show. And, apparently, it was me that kept her alive, because I said – when I heard about the idea – I said, “Oh, don’t kill her at the end. That’s the Star Trek thing to do.” So he kept her alive just because I said that. So, ok. And I wrote to him – I sent him an email – saying, “Well, I didn’t know I’d done that, so… but thanks.” and he said, “Oh it doesn’t matter, Steven, she flew straight off into a moon!”"

Personally, I refuse to believe that Jenny is dead. From the tone of the story, it seems that Davies was just taking the piss out of Moffat. There is, therefore, still hope that Jenny could return to the show.

More from Doctor Who

To paraphrase ‘M.T.A.‘ by Jacqueline Steiner and Bess Lomax Hawes: Did she ever return? No, she never returned and her fate is still unlearned. This is quite applicable to Jenny, as well as so very many other characters on Doctor Who.
