Doctor Who: Sean Pertwee Not Interested in Being the Next Doctor

We have seen Sean Pertwee dress up as his father Jon in the costume of the Third Doctor. However, he will not be following his father’s footsteps and take on the title role in Doctor Who.

Even though Peter Capaldi has yet to state that he will be departing from Doctor Who after Series Ten, there is plenty of speculation as to who his successor will be. After all, both Matt Smith and David Tennant had spent three seasons in the role, and Capaldi is entering his third year. He has also stated a desire to work on other projects, while saying that Series Ten could well be his last.

While there is certain to be plenty of speculation as to who will follow in Capaldi’s footsteps as the Doctor, one possible option has already removed himself from consideration. Sean Pertwee, the son of Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor, has stated that he would not be interested in the role of the Doctor, in part due to his father’s legacy on the show.

"“Too big boots to fill. I could never do that. I’d love to, at some point in my life, do something as an ode to my father and also as an ode to the show. It’s an institution, it something that makes you proud to be British … But how can you top my dad? You can’t. He was my Doctor Who,” Pertwee said."

Even though he seemingly closed the door on being the Doctor in the future, Pertwee did not dismiss the idea of coming on the show in some way. Perhaps he could put on the costume of his father in an episode where the Doctor runs into his past. Or, perhaps Pertwee could guest star in another way, even to the point where he could have a recurring character on the show.

Doctor Who is a program that has spanned generations, so it would make sense for Pertwee the Younger to make an appearance at some point. He would not be the first person to be related to a former Doctor to appear on the show, as Georgia Moffett had a guest appearance. The opportunity could certainly be there.

Even if Sean Pertwee is not interested in becoming the Doctor at some point in time, he can still carry on his father’s legacy on Doctor Who in some manner. Hopefully, we can see Pertwee on the show in the somewhat near future.
