We are going to be forced to go an entire year without any new episodes of Doctor Who. What is a Whovian to do in that time frame?

It is any Whovian’s worst nightmare – a year without anything new for Doctor Who. This is a time of consternation, where the gnashing of teeth and the demands that the BBC pay the Daleks whatever ransom they require for the return of the Doctor drown out any other thoughts. We are truly in a dark place.

What is a Whovian to do? Fortunately, with over fifty years of existence, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy Doctor Who without having new episodes to watch. Let’s go over a few of those options.

Watch Classic Who. How many of us out there have watched every episode of Classic Doctor Who? Of those of you that have, when was the last time you watched those episodes? Breaks like this are perfect for going back and watching those older episodes to either catch up on the history of the show or to refresh one’s memory.

More from Doctor Who

Go back over the more recent seasons. Yes, NuWho is relatively recent, especially compared to Classic Doctor Who. However, it has been on the air for ten years now. With everything that has happened, and the different adventures of the Doctor and his companions, sometimes details can be forgotten. After all, it has been quite some time since Christopher Eccleston graced the TARDIS. This is the perfect time to go back and rewatch those seasons, just to refresh ones memory.

Check out the spinoffs. Torchwood. the Sarah Jane Chronicles. The upcoming series Class. The Big Finish episodes. Maybe these are not Doctor Who itself, but they are set in the Whoniverse, and in the case of Big Finish, can provide additional adventures of your favorite Doctor. other shows, like Torchwood, give a nice look at some of the other characters that were a part of Doctor Who, letting the spotlight shine upon them. If you haven’t caught up with these, now is the perfect time.

Read the novels or comic books. Not only has Doctor Who spawned several spinoffs, but the Whoniverse is perfect for novelization. We have established characters and enemies, so it is just a matter of crafting a proper story. These novels, and comic books, often do quite well in that aspect, and are an interesting way to get another look at some of our favorite characters in a different setting.

Next: Chris Chibnall to replace Steven Moffat

Maybe we will not have any new episodes of Doctor Who for a year, but that does not mean that we have to miss the Doctor. There is still plenty of other options out there to get our fix for the Whoniverse, and to learn more about the world the Doctor is a part of.
