In Doctor Who, Sontarans are a race that no longer elicits much excitement amongst the populous. Here in reality, a photo of an embryonic Sontaran from a hatchery fetched quite the hefty sum.
Let us think of the relationship between Strax and the Doctor for a moment. The Doctor refers to Strax as a murderous potato; Strax keeps trying to kill the Doctor and steal the TARDIS. It is quite the mutually beneficial relationship, and one that continually entertains Doctor Who fans.
Yet, outside of the Whoniverse, the Sontaran is an under-represented being. Here on Earth in modern times, we do not have the luxury of being able to wander down the street and seeing Strax dispatching of the latest horse that caused him to get lost. Sontaran sightings are rarer than those of the Yeti, the Loch Ness Monsteror, rarest of all, an actual Nickelback fan.
Perhaps that is why this photo of an embryonic Sontaran fetched over $1 Million. Having actual photographic proof of a Sontaran, and one developing in their hatchery, for that matter, is certainly noteworthy. Now, there is actual proof of their existence for all of those naysayers out there.

Yes, maybe this merely appears to be a photograph of some normal potato. Maybe instead of going forth and expanding the Sontaran Empire, this photogenic spud will end up as home fries, fried up with onions and garlic, or as a baked potato. But look closely, and one can see the beginnings of an eye and the vestiges of limbs. Would you want to risk attempting to devour a Strax clone, much like what was done to embryonic Omicronians when they were turned into Popplers? Heed Futurama‘s warning!
It is easy to see why one would be confused. Indeed, this Sontaran embryo does appear quite spudlike, and could well be a fine Irish specimen. But look beyond the photograph and one can sense the malice and desire for mayhem, destruction and glorious death behind this innocent facade.

Oh, wait. That’s actually a photograph of a potato and I’m just really drunk? Well then, carry on. Nothing to see here.
