As Steven Moffat’s successor as showrunner of Doctor Who, Chris Chibnall gets John Barrowman’s seal of approval.
At Heroes & Villains Fan Fest, John Barrowman teased that he has written a script that might soon get picked up. When he reached out before Christmas to Chris Chibnall to be the showrunner, Barrowman mysteriously did not receive a reply. The mystery was soon solved, however, when it was announced a couple of weeks ago that Chibnall would succeed Steven Moffat as showrunner of Doctor Who.
For those of us who love Captain Jack Harkness, according to Barrowman there are sadly no plans for him to return to the role as of yet. He firmly stated that, “I have to say, I am an Arrow man at the moment, and I’m hopefully there to stay.” It would conceivably be possible, however, for him to make occasional appearances on Doctor Who without it disrupting his Arrow schedule. It would be particularly appropriate to explain what happened in Jack’s missing two years during which shady things were said to have gone down.

To get more of an idea of what Chibnall’s time as showrunner might be like, he wrote the Doctor Who episodes ‘42,’ ‘The Hungry Earth,’ ‘Cold Blood,’ ‘Pond Life‘ (webisodes), ‘Dinosaurs on a Spaceship,’ ‘The Power of Three,’ and ‘P.S.‘ (storyboard webisode). He also wrote the Torchwood episodes ‘Day One,’ ‘Cyberwoman,’ ‘Countrycide,’ ‘End of Days,’ ‘Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,’ ‘Adrift,’ ‘Fragments,’ and ‘Exit Wounds.’
So, if Jack’s return does not come to pass, the silver lining is that Chibnall wrote a lot for the character, so we can most likely look forward to a similar sensibility during Chibnall’s time as showrunner. In any case, it will probably be a fantastic run.
