Doctor Who: It Is the Perfect Time for a Male Companion

It is thought that, at some point in time, Doctor Who will see a male as the Doctor’s primary companion once again. With Steven Moffat set to depart after this season, now may be the perfect time to introduce such a change.

Changes are going to be coming to Doctor Who. Steven Moffat will be departing, with Chris Chibnall taking over as the new showrunner. Clara is gone, with a new companion eventually coming in to take her place. Even Peter Capaldi may be departing in the somewhat near future, leaving the show with a great deal of change in the next year or two.

With that being the case, it may be time to change the dynamic in the TARDIS. Over the years, especially during the new incarnation of the show, we have gotten used to the dynamic of the Doctor and his female companion. Yes, there have been the occasional male companions, but those have been the boyfriends of the companions, as opposed to someone travelling with the Doctor on their own.

More from Doctor Who

Of course, there are problems with this idea. Capaldi himself is not overly fond of the concept of having a male companion, as he had stated his concern that his male counterpart would get more of the action during episodes of Doctor Who. However, given the amount of action that companions currently get on the show, there is plenty to go around. Capaldi would not be wrapped in a protective shell and placed in the corner for safe keeping.

With this switch, we could even see Capaldi at his best as the Twelfth Doctor. A male companion could fit his style, and personality, a bit better than a female companion had. After all, even with how close he and Clara became in that final season, the Doctor still had a way of saying things to make her question their relationship.

With one season left before he departs, Steven Moffat could truly change the course of Doctor Who. Hopefully, he does decide that it is time to change the dynamic aboard the TARDIS.
