Alex Kingston will return in series 2 of Big Finish’s audio spin-off series – and once again, she’s not the only time traveller to make an appearance…
Back in December, Big Finish released the first series of The Diary of River Song, a rather fun spin-off that starred Alex Kingston in the title role and explored River’s adventures as a time travelling archaeologist, without her husband saving the day. Well, mostly – he still showed up in the last episode, but events were complicated when his Eighth incarnation appeared, long before he was meant to meet her. In her next series, as announced by Big Finish, she doesn’t have one incarnation of her husband to deal with – this time, she’s got two!
"From the space exploration vessel Saturnius – which is heading to a destination that never gets any closer – to a doomed planet Earth and beyond, River’s journey will bring her closer to a new foe… and an encounter with both the Sixth and Seventh Doctors."
As I wrote in my review, I really enjoyed the first series of The Diary of River Song, and I’m excited to learn that Alex Kingston will be sharing a story with Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, two Doctors that may not have received the best of runs on television (although personally, I’m a big fan of McCoy’s last two seasons), but have been served very well by Big Finish. Despite being consecutive incarnations, they’re ultimately very different Doctors, so I’m really curious to learn what River will make of each of them.
"‘We’re thrilled to have both Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy appearing alongside Alex in this box set,’ says producer David Richardson. ‘I can promise that River and the Doctor might not necessarily be working to the same agenda. In fact, the two Doctors might not be working to the same agenda either…’"

I can’t lie: that last sentence doesn’t remotely surprise me. While Six could be arrogant at times, he arguably grew to become more heroic as he went on, particularly in the audios, while Seven was an incarnation that seemed more focused on the bigger picture than saving individual lives. I’m excited to see if he and his previous incarnation actually meet, or if he’s being his usual devious self and actually manipulating events in which his previous incarnation is involved. Either way, I’m curious how the wild card of a future wife will affect his plans.
But that’s not all! In addition to announcing River’s next series, other upcoming releases have been revealed, including Doctor Who: The Churchill Years Volume 2 and Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters Volume 2 (the latter of which is still months away from the first volume’s release).

I’m really excited about this release, as I’m particularly curious to learn what River will make of these two incarnations, especially Seven; even as someone who’s not afraid to get her hands dirty, would she approve of his methods? I’m eager to find out in January 2017!
