Doctor Who: New Companion to be Revealed on Saturday
By David Hill
The wait has been excruciating. The rumors have continued to fly, with various actors mentioned as the possible next companion on Doctor Who. Well, after tomorrow, our wait will be over.
It was time. Clara Oswald had developed into an excellent companion, a true friend and confidant of the Doctor’s. She had become someone that he could trust implicitly, the type of companion that he needed. But, as with all things on Doctor Who, her time had come, and Clara departed to have her own adventures.
Yet, from the moment that Clara first faced the raven, then absconded with Me in their own stolen TARDIS to have adventures of their own, the question of who would replace her swiftly surfaced. Plenty of rumors have been discussed, with Peter Capaldi himself giving his thoughts as to what he would want as the next companion on the show. It was almost enough to drink a person mad trying to keep track of all the potential actors mentioned for the role.

Thankfully, this madness will be coming to an end shortly. The BBC announced on Twitter that the identity of the new companion will be forthcoming, as they will announce who will take on the role on Saturday during their Match of the Day Live.
Considering that Doctor Who is expected to begin filming next month, it is about time. While one can understand the desire for secrecy and that by keeping the identity of the next companion a secret, rumors would continue to abound, this had dragged on for far too long. If Capaldi himself is saying that the companion had been cast, then why not just come out an announce it?
Perhaps the idea is that, by continuing to delay the announcement, Doctor Who would continue to be in the news. After all, any press is positive, especially if it draws more views to the show. But it is not as though Doctor Who is some small cult favorite any longer – it is a worldwide phenomenon and just does not need to have such tricks to draw fans and viewers. Just make the announcement and be done already.
