It has been quite some time since we saw the Silence on Doctor Who. Or maybe we just forgot. What are these tally marks for again?
In terms of a creature that we would want to see return to Doctor Who, the Silence rank quite high on that list. One of the greatest creations from Steven Moffat, along with the Weeping Angels, the Silence were perhaps the most fearsome enemy that the Eleventh Doctor faced during Series Six.
Although they have yet to return to the television screen, the Silence will be making a return. In the upcoming Big Finish audio drama UNIT: Silenced, Kate Stewart and UNIT will be facing the Silence, as they have gotten through the Doctor’s trap and find a defenseless world before them. Now, only Stewart and her organization will be able to save the world from whatever fate the Silence have in mind.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the Silence translate to an audio drama such as those Big Finish produces. While they do a stellar job with their own stories and spinoffs, the Silence are a very visual entity. Their ability to make others forget they are there and manipulate people into doing their bidding lends itself perfectly to television; will that same effect be there without those visuals before us?
Not only does the story sound interesting, but the added intrigue of seeing, or hearing, how well the Silence translate over will be worth checking out the upcoming adventure. Set to be released as a box set and available through Big Finish in November, this third collection of tales involving UNIT may be the most interesting one yet.

Of course, a great deal of how these audio dramas are will revolve around how well the Silence translate to a non-visual setting. Hopefully, this will be a seamless transition.
