Doctor Who: Filling in the Gaps

At first glance, it appears as though the new companion, Bill, could be out of the 1980s. Is Steven Moffat looking to fill in the gap of the lost years of Doctor Who?

If there is one thing that fans of Doctor Who wish they could change, most of them may agree that it would involve those years where the show was on hiatus. The Seventh Doctor and Ace had walked off into the distance, and while the next season was partially written, the show would not return to television until 2005.

While we did get the movie featuring the Eighth Doctor, that was a one time moment in those sixteen years of darkness. There were so many stories that could have been told, and given the changes facing the world over that time, we all could have used the Doctor. Yet, he was not there.

Now, we might have a chance to see a few potential storylines from that time. With Bill looking as though she came out of the 1980s, and the later part of the decade at that, we could get to see the Doctor in that time. Just think of the possibilities, as the Doctor could be fending off alien threats against the backdrop of the fall of Communism and the unification of Germany, amongst other events.

Likewise, we get the interesting possibility of having a companion from the past sent to the modern day. Just imagine what it would be like going from the late 1980s to today. Even though the early vestiges of modern technology existed in that era, the world has changed by leaps and bounds.

In that era of transition and change, the planet would theoretically be ripe for the taking. With creatures such as the Daleks and Cybermen interested in conquest, and the possibility that the Master/Missy could have found a foothold amongst the chaos, the storylines that could have existed had the chance to be truly special. Alas, the BBC had stopped supporting Doctor Who, leading to those years without light.
