Doctor Who: Sean Pertwee Does Not Want to be the Doctor

While Sean Pertwee would love to be on Doctor Who in a guest role, he is not interested in following in his father’s footsteps and being a future incarnation of the Time Lord.

Doctor Who has been a family affair in more ways than one. While it has helped connect multiple generations, united through their enjoyment of the show, there have also been familial ties within the 53 year history of Doctor Who itself. Peter Davison and his daughter, Georgia Moffett, both appeared on the show, with Moffett later marrying David Tennant.

However, we have not had a true second generation Doctor. That has not stopped the speculation before, as Sean Pertwee had mentioned previously that he wanted to make an appearance on the show, but he would not want to be the next Doctor. Now, he has amended that statement, saying that he does not want to portray the Doctor at all, due to the legacy of his father, Jon Pertwee.

More from Doctor Who

It is unfortunate that this Pertwee will not consider taking a turn aboard the TARDIS as the Doctor in the future. While his father was one of the more beloved Doctors, and it would be difficult to follow in his footsteps, it certainly would have been interesting to see what his incarnation of the Doctor would have been like. It also would have been interesting to see if his incarnation would have involved some elements of the Third Doctor’s wardrobe as an homage.

Even without his father’s legacy, it makes sense that Pertwee may only want to make a guest appearance. As the younger Alfred in Gotham, Pertwee is already on one hit television show. Becoming the Doctor is a time consuming role, and Pertwee simply may not have time to do so, given his responsibilities.

Perhaps, even if Pertwee will not be a future incarnation of the Doctor, he could make a cameo as his illustrious father, taking on the role of the Third Doctor in a future episode. He has several pictures of himself in the Third Doctor’s costume, and makes a quite convincing appearance as his father.

Next: The quest to be a good man

Sean Pertwee still wants to appear on Doctor Who. However, he does not want to take on the role of the Doctor in the future. He is his own man, on his own path.
