Doctor Who: Tom Baker and David Tennant Respond to Brexit

Former Doctor Who Doctors Tom Baker and David Tennant each had an epic response to the Brexit vote.

Today, July 4th, is the day that the United States of America celebrates its 1776 Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. On June 23rd of this year, the United Kingdom (of which Great Britain is a part) narrowly voted to leave the European Union, a referendum colloquially known as Brexit.

When asked about Brexit, Tom Baker — best known as the Fourth Doctor — gave a fiery answer highly appropriate for his personality. According to the Mirror, Baker said to the Daily Star that he is “amazed” that “old people” are still allowed to vote. He fairly includes himself in that assertion, as he “no longer care.”

"“I am old, so it’s not my problem. I’ll be dead. I’m resigned to that. I could weep when I read terrible, crushing headlines about the mountain of grief in the world – but what can I do for them?”"

What he means by “old” is unclear. What would be the age cutoff? Also, would this apply to all voting, or simply certain issues?

He also noted the public’s “contempt and mistrust” of members of parliament in these “tumultuous times,” calling the representatives “mostly w*****s” whom he doesn’t think “have any ideas.” His perception is that most people under the governance of MPs want to “kick their b*****s in.”

Well, we in the United States feel the same way about the vast majority of our politicians. One in particular who angers a great many people is Presidential candidate Donald Trump, who paid a recent visit to Scotland. While giving a speech there, he praised the Brexit decision… the problem being that the majority of voters in Scotland voted against the EU referendum.

More from Doctor Who

In an amazing segment on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, David Tennant — best known as the Tenth Doctor — read a portion of the many tweets mocking Trump on his faux pas. Of course, obligatory Doctor Who references were made. As this is about politics, and David Tennant is Scottish, reference was also made to Twelfth Doctor and fellow Scot Peter Capaldi’s foul-mouthed character Malcolm Tucker of the dark political comedy program The Thick of It and its spin-off movie In the Loop.
