Joss Whedon would consider writing for Doctor Who but there are conditions on his accepting an offer.
One thing that Whovians like to do is to imagine what it would be like for various famous writers and directors to work on Doctor Who. Sometimes, our dreams are realized. For example, we have had the pleasure of Neil Gaiman contributing to the show. There are other names who have been tossed about for years, but have yet to come on board the staff — names such as Peter Jackson and Joss Whedon. The former was featured in a teaser video last year, prompting a surge of rumors that he would soon write at least one episode for Doctor Who. This, however, has yet to come to pass.

As for the latter, he recently spoke about what would inspire him to write for Doctor Who. During a Q&A at Nerd HQ at San Diego New Children’s Museum on Sunday, July 24th, a fan asked Whedon if he would hypothetically take up an offer to write an episode for the program. He acknowledged how much of a “daunting” undertaking it would be, not only being a successor to the current team, but also having to do an enormous amount of research on the program’s lengthy history. He has “seen some of it,” but implied that he has a lot more to go.
But the highlight of his answer was when he said that we should “check back with when the Doctor is a she.” To this, many in the audience responded with cheers and applause. He then added the “suffix” of “…or Idris Elba,” which the audience also appreciated.
