The various novels have become a hallmark of Doctor Who, providing additional adventures for various characters, past and present. Class, the latest spin-off, is going to receive the same treatment.

As it stands, there are still quite a few questions in regards to the latest Doctor Who spin-off, Class, that go beyond the actual program itself. For instance, will it only be a one time miniseries, or will it last beyond the first season? If it does continue on, as the students age and graduate, will they be replaced by new stars? In short, what will the future hold for the program?

Well, we may have a bit of a hint as to what the goal is. The BBC is set to have three novels tying in to Class, which will be released during the fall. Again, not many details are available, as it is uncertain whether or not the novels will take place within the school or in the world at large, but it does show a commitment to the spin-off.

More from Winter is Coming

These novels add an interesting dimension. The premise of Class is an intriguing concept, but until the show actually airs, no one has any idea as to how it will be received. Yes, it could do quite well, especially given the popularity of Doctor Who, but spin-offs for other shows have failed in the past. By putting together the novels, the BBC is furthering their financial support of the show, at least in way.

Class could also be a bit of a litmus test for the future of Doctor Who as well. The first true spin-off since Torchwood went on hiatus, the success of Class could be a sign of how Doctor Who is faring overall. Should the novels sell at a decent clip, and the show itself gets solid ratings, then the future of Doctor Who would appear to still be bright.
