New Big Finish Torchwood Audio Adventures: The Lives of Captain Jack

Big Finish has announced four new Torchwood audio adventures expanding on the story of Captain Jack Harkness.

In possibly the biggest Torchwood audio adventures by Big Finish yet, some significant events in the life of Captain Jack Harkness will be explored. The four part series, The Lives of Captain Jack, will be “full cast” and star John Barrowman as Jack (obviously). The stories will span various times and planets. Guest stars include Russell Tovey as Midshipman Alonso Frame, Camille Coduri as Jackie Tyler, and Alexander Vlahos as The Stranger. Foes include Mother Nothing (played by Katy Manning) and the Council Of Three (played by Chris Allen, Christel Dee, and James Goss).

‘The Year After I Died’ by Guy Adams will have Jack saving the Earth from the Daleks in the year 200,101. ‘Wednesdays For Beginners’ by James Goss teams up Jack and Jackie to defend the Powell Estate. ‘One Enchanted Evening’ by James Goss finally delves into what happened after the Doctor set Jack and Alonso up at that bar in ‘The End of Time.’ ‘Month 25’ by Guy Adams gives us a glimpse of Jack’s early days at the Time Agency.

In his endearingly naughty fashion, Barrowman joked that he “find[s] it really easy to slip into Captain Jack.” As is quite apparent, he acknowledges that both the character and the actor have a bit of each inside the other. Lack of time is the reason that he gives for why such tales were not told on Doctor Who or Torchwood on television.

According to producer James Goss:

"We love John. He understands Captain Jack like no-one else, and easily provided the various versions of him – having just spent three days playing Torchwood Jack, he suddenly delivered preppy Time Agent Jack, Satellite 5 Jack, End of Time Jack, and effortlessly locked horns with Jackie Tyler. Watching him together in the studio with Camille was genuinely one of the happiest days of my life. We were so lucky to get John, and can’t wait to get him back."

More from Winter is Coming

It is unclear if that last sentence from Goss implies more recording sessions for this particular series, or plans for even more adventures going forward.

The director and script editor for The Lives of Captain Jack is Scott Handcock and the executive producers are Jason Haigh-Ellery and Nicholas Briggs. The cover art is by Lee Binding. It is currently available for pre-order (four CD set $33.32 and digital $20.00) on Big Finish’s website and will be released in June of 2017.
