Game of Thrones wants 70 horses for filming in Extremadura, Spain

As filming for Game of Thrones Season 7 continues, Spanish-language website Hoy reports that the production team is looking for 70 horses to film a scene or scenes in Extremadura, a region in Spain. HBO will be shooting parts on Season 7 in three places in Extremadura: the city of Cáceres, the village of Malpartida, and Trujillo Castle.

At least a few of the horses in question are being provided by Victoria & Richard, a company that trains horses to compete internationally in the sports of Eventing and Dressage. (AKA making horses jump over hurdles and making them dance, respectively). Hoy also notes that these horses are “used to smoke and noise.”

What would the production need 70 hardy horses for? Let’s get to speculating.

Not long ago, Spanish-language fansite Los Siete Reinos reported that the show will likely film a battle scene in Malpartida, probably near a beautiful seaside location called Los Barruecos. The casting call for extras for the scene asked for men with military experience who wouldn’t mind shaving their facial hair, which probably means Unsullied. Producers also wanted “a lot of horses” for the scene. Since the Unsullied and Dothraki are now both working together, they may land at the same place. And naturally, once all those horses get off the boats, they’ll kick up a lot of dust and make a lot of noise, whether or not they’re joining battle.

Then, while at the Emmys, Emilia Clarke (Daenerys) hinted that something big’s on the horizon. Note that she’s read the Season 7 by this point. “There’s, like, another battle that’s epic,” she said. Seventy horses could go a long way towards making a battle epic. And if Daenerys is involved, then her Dothraki Horde likely isn’t far behind.

The question remains: who will Dany and her army be fighting? Well, it’s starting to look like the city of Cáceres will stand in for King’s Landing in Season 7. Might Los Barruecos stand in for Blackwater Bay? That major battle might involve Daenerys trying to take the city. For now, we continue to speculate, until we get some more concrete news from Spain.
