Westworld Episode 3 “The Stray” Instant Reaction
Our instant reaction to Westworld episode 3 “The Stray.”
WARNING: THIS POST MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!
We’ve been looking forward to Westworld episode 3 “The Stray” since we heard it would be directed by Neil Marshall, who also directed some of the biggest episodes of Game of Thrones. Tonight’s episode of Westworld proved that we were right to be excited.
HBO’s promotion for “The Stray” made us think that we might be seeing an episode focused on the man in black or Maeve, but like everything else in Westworld it wasn’t what we first thought.
“The Stray” in the episode was of course referring to the stray host who disappeared while chopping wood. This led to him being tracked down by Elsie Hughes and Ashley Stubbs. Stubbs and Hughes found their stray, but got more than they bargained for. The host had malfunctioned and was able to wake himself up from being put in sleep mode and attack Stubbs. After that he almost killed Hughes with a rock. The host didn’t actually hurt either of them, but it’s the closest we’ve seen to a host harming a human.
We also found out a few small facts that will have big impacts on some of the big theories about Westworld. First off Stubbs and Hughes weren’t able to located the missing host at a moment. They may be able to see the whole park from their devices, but they don’t have complete vision of the entire park at all times. Things can happen in Westworld without managment seeing it. It also means the flies are cameras theory is probably out the window, though we thought that theory was pushing it already.
We also saw Bernard talking to his wife, ex-wife, or the mother of the son he lost. Bernard mentioned that it was hard to get a connection where he was. This plays into the idea that Westworld is very isolated. We still think the park has to be located either underground or underwater. We also heard Bernard talking about “life on this planet” so we know Westworld isn’t on Mars as some have guessed.
Speaking of Bernard the biggest reveal of the night came from a conversation between him and Ford. Apparently Ford had a partner, and that partner wanted to create real life. Ford’s mysterious partner is supposedly dead, but Ford didn’t give out many details. Inevitably this is going to lead to a lot of Arnold is the man in black theories.
The hosts are talking about Arnold, so it would be easy to say that Arnold is behind everything, but it’s not going to be that simple on Westworld. Bernard also got a talking to from Ford about his dead son and wanting too much from the hosts. This led to Bernard sitting down with Delores once again. Bernard was going to reset Dolores, but then changed his mind. The way Bernard feels about Dolores, almost like she’s a child, is going to be important.
Teddy once again got killed, this time by cult members in Ford’s new crazy storyline. Poor Teddy really is the Kenny of Westworld. Teddy is still dutifully fulfilling his role and doesn’t appear to remember anything, despite Dolores practically asking for him to.
Lastly the man in black is William theory might be dead. It looks like Dolores runs into William after she shoots another host and remembers the nightly assault at her house. That means William is probably in the same timeline as the man in black. Then again the series has been full of twists and turns already, so until we see William and the man in black together anything is possible.
