Doctor Who: The “Big Ideas” of Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat
By Leah Tedesco
Peter Capaldi suggests an idea for the plot of an episode of Doctor Who, and also discusses showrunner Steven Moffat’s “big ideas.”
A couple of years ago, we shared an article titled ‘Proposed Cliche Episode Structures for Doctor Who.’ In it, we suggested the gimmicks of musical, animation, and backward plot. The potential varies for these concepts to either work well, or be cringe worthy disasters. Either way, Peter Capaldi recently suggested an interesting episode structure for Doctor Who. And while generally not a new one, it would certainly be very interesting to see executed on the program.
In an interview earlier this month with Katharine Trendacosta of io9, he said that he would like to do an episode in which the Doctor wakes up to finds himself “trapped inside a television show that’s like Doctor Who.” The details of this meta idea include the main character having “an alcohol problem” and going up against “men in rubber monster suits.”

Around the same time, in an interview with Steven of IGN, Capaldi discussed this thoughts on Steven Moffat’s creative input, calling the showrunner “absolutely brilliant.” The actor said that he prefers to be surprised when it comes to the plot, so he tells Moffat to not reveal any of his “big ideas” before Capaldi has a chance to read the script. He also questioned whether or not having advance knowledge of such things “helps you act it any better.”
Capaldi’s tactic would make sense as life is full of surprises and, even if one has a vague idea of what is likely to happen, nothing is ever certain. This is even generally true of Time Lords with their vast scope of knowledge.
