Doctor Who: Donald Trump Has Been Established in the Whoniverse

Typically, U.S. politics are not dealt with on Doctor Who. But when a figure such as Donald Trump is involved, an exception can be made… and it has been.

Over here in the United States, panic level is at a fever pitch now that Donald Trump has become the President-Elect. California is openly suggesting that they may secede, and the country may well be as divided as we have seen in the past century. But fortunately, we have a small mental and emotional refuge in Doctor Who. It only occasionally touches on the politics of our planet — usually only in a fictional sense — and rarely deals with American politics, specifically.

Well, about that… It turns out that Trump has appeared in the Whoniverse. And while it may not involve the Doctor himself, but rather a novel for Class, Trump is an established presence. In What She Does Next Will Astound You, the third of three planned Class novels, Trump is referenced on truthordare.com, where he was considered to be unstoppable.

Naturally, the Doctor would have his thoughts about Trump. According to Steven Moffat in Doctor Who Magazine issue 503, “although the Doctor normally takes no part in politics, he is disgusted and turbulent with rage.” He went on to refer to a parallel universe where Trump becomes President, and everyone is doomed.

And with that bit of information, we have learned that we are living in a parallel universe. Hopefully, the actual, real Dave is in a better place than I am. And perhaps, his musings on Doctor Who are actually appreciated by more of the fans, but chances are, I’m asking for far too much there. Anyway, I digress.

It is certainly interesting that the Doctor, or that the Whoniverse for that matter, would weigh in on a candidate in the Presidential Election. Doctor Who tends to avoid politics as a whole, even in England, unless in a general way as a plot device. To call out a specific candidate, and to say that the world is doomed with him as President, is quite the exceptional condemnation.

Maybe there is some parallel universe that is doomed, but we can hope that it is not this one.
