Prime Minister Theresa May’s Doctor Who Christmas Special Tradition
By David Hill
Seemingly everyone has plans to watch the Doctor Who Christmas special. This even includes the UK’s Prime Minister, Theresa May.
Everyone, even heads of state, need to take time away from their responsibilities. Holidays such as Christmas provide the perfect opportunity to get away for a bit, and spend time with the family. Or, to even spend time by oneself, relaxing before having to face the realities that the world has put forth. Being a world leader is, after all, a mentally taxing profession.
Understandably, United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May intends to get away for a bit on Christmas. Her plans for the day involve spending some time with friends before helping churches provide lunch for elderly citizens. Afterwards, she will be watching the Doctor Who Christmas special, and ending the day with some Agatha Christie.
This is an annual tradition for May. She stated that she attempts to watch the show every year, saying “I always like to see Doctor Who on Christmas night, if possible, and a nice Agatha Christie to curl up with. David Suchet was a great Poirot – he got him to a T.”

It is easy to lose sight of the fact that even politicians are people as well. For the most part, they mean well, trying to help their constituents as much as possible. At least, that is the case hypothetically. Their actions may prove otherwise.
Nonetheless, their interests can mirror ours in a multitude of ways. Watching programs like Doctor Who illustrate that they are not in a vacuum, and that, like us, they are fans of the show. And, perhaps, if May enjoys the Christmas special and the upcoming season, the BBC can stop being targeted by the government as an expense to cut back. It would certainly help ensure that shows like Doctor Who could continue their high standards of excellence.
