Season 7 filming locations
The Game of Thrones crew is no stranger to gorgeous, sweeping landscapes. Let’s look at some of the places they’ve visited during Season 7 filming so far.
Spain
This year, the production spent a lot of time in the city of Cáceres, in Spain. The beautiful, 13th-through-15th century architecture doubles perfectly for parts of King’s Landing. Many sites around the city, particularly ones in its Old Town district, were used. Some of the scenes filmed here included massive SPOILER payloads.
The city also stood in for Oldtown, as when actors John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) and Hannah Murray (Gilly) were spotted rumbling through the streets in a horse-drawn cart.
There was also a lot of filming at Los Barruecos (particularly around El Barrueco de Arriba) near the town of Malpartida. Los Barruecos are a national monument featuring a rocky coastline near a river, the perfect place to set any number of outdoor scenes.
It’s a lovely area, but as you can see, it will play hosts to some armies on the march, and things may get bloody.
Croatia
The Game of Thrones production has used Dubrovnik, Croatia to stand in for King’s Landing for years, and although Cáceres largely took on that job for Season 7, Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) and Hafthor Bjornsson (Ser Gregor) all returned at one point.
Furthermore, the crew brought a snow machine into the city limits, which can only mean one thing: winter has finally come to Westeros’ capital city.
Iceland
The sweeping grandeur of Iceland makes for a perfect location for adventures beyond The Wall. Iceland stood in for those areas in Seasons 2 and 3, and it looks like it’ll happen again in Season 7.
Northern Ireland
The Game of Thrones production travels around the world, but Belfast is the home of Titanic Studios, where most of the principle photography is shot.
But for Season 7, the show went a little out of the ordinary and built a massive, snowy set at the nearby Wolf Hill Quarry. Word is there will be a big action sequence in this space. More on that later.
