31) LIAM CUNNINGHAM

Liam Cunningham has endeared us the former smuggler and current Onion Knight Ser Davos, the soft-voiced pragmatist who can’t believe what he’s seeing half the time. That feeling may not be too far off from Cunningham’s real life, since the day in the mid 1980’s when he got tired of his electrician’s job (in Africa) and decided to try acting school.

The Irish-born Cunningham described his career trajectory in a 2014 interview with The Daily Mail: “I thought I might have a go at that after coming back from Africa and I was looking for a distraction. It wasn’t until I started doing it that I fell in love with it. It was like heroin, I couldn’t get enough of it. I mean, I still say I have no interest in being an actor – I just love acting … I love my arthouse films and I love taking a chance.”

Cunningham continues to deliver critically acclaimed performances in ‘arthouse’ films like Dog Soldiers (2002), The Wind that Shakes the Barley (2006), Hunger (2008), and as Jack Cope in the brilliant 2011 drama Black Butterflies with Thrones costar Carice van Houten (Melisandre).

Although he’s a theater and arthouse film aficionado, Cunningham doesn’t shy away from popcorn blockbusters, having appeared as Maguire in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008, photo above), Solon in 2010’s Clash of the Titans (working with Rory McCaan, the Hound), an Army Doctor in War Horse (2011) and Brick in Centurion (2010).

One of Cunningham’s earliest notable Hollywood film roles was as the well-coiffed Agravaine in First Knight (above, 1995). As for his TV resume, the hard-working actor has appeared on a lot of shows, including Cracker (1995), Murphy’s Law (2006), Outcasts (2011), Merlin (2015) and Doctor Who (2013).

It looks like Cunningham will be seen in the film 24 Hours to Live in 2017, although no formal release date has been set.
