Thin Ice Questions: Will The Doctor Who Episode Live to The Hype?

facebooktwitterreddit

The episode Thin Ice will be airing in less than 12 hours. We know the teasers, know that the episode will take on white washing in society, and most of all, a major turn (might) change in Bill and The Doctor’s friendship as she realizes he has done more in his life than just save civilizations.

More from Doctor Who

Before the episode airs, I thought it might be good to get our ducks in a row, so to speak, and figure out our Thin Ice questionsJust in case you’ve forgotten, here’s a synopsis of tomorrow’s episode:

"London, 1814. The entire city has turned out for the biggest Frost Fair in decades! But beneath the frozen Thames, revellers are disappearing, snatched through the ice. Pulled into the depths where a terrifying monster lurks. Will the Doctor and Bill stop the slaughter before they too are dragged into the icy waters?"

Whitewashing On Television

First, all week I’ve seen headlines saying that this is the episode where Moffat is going to attack whitewashing on television. I wrote an article just last night, not so much about what the episode (or any episode) should do, but the effect it needs to have.

Can this episode have the effect it needs to, or wants to, have on television viewers, given the allotted time and the fact that it’s probably not a part of the storyline? I’m saying, most likely the Silence aren’t back forcing cast directors to only cast white people. I highly doubt that will happen in the Thames during Victorian times.

I hope that this episode does do a good job and that Moffat carried through with what he wanted to achieve. But it wouldn’t be the first time Moffat said, ‘This is gonna be a great thing!!’ and people were let down. I’m cautiously hoping for the best.

Bill’s Reaction To The Doctor

In the teaser BBC posted, you can see her with red eyes, looking at him and asking the question that every NewWho companion has asked and feared the answer. Some, Donna comes to mind most of all, were understanding when the Doctor needed a hand getting through part of his life. It was obviously important for the Doctor to tell Rose because it had just happened, so saying it was going to be hard for him.

It looks like Bill is…heartbroken? And it makes sense. We’ve had two great episodes, the tv-honeymoon had to end soon. And considering the next episode is about Bill and her friends, meaning she’s not with the Doctor, we might be expecting some strong answers.

Where is Madame Vastra, Jenny, and Strax?

This question just irks me. You can bring back things from past regenerations, Moffat!
