Doctor Who Opinion: Will Doctor Who ever make it to the Emmy stage?
Emmys, Doctor Who
Yesterday, we did a post about the three categories that Doctor Who would have nominations in for the Emmys based on this season. However, this is only in our nerdy minds, since in it’s 50+ years, Doctor Who has never made it to the official Emmy nominee list.
But is it on its way?
Slowly, with the sudden popularity in the United States thanks to BBC America and other ways of viewing the series, it’s possible Doctor Who could be on its way to meeting the standards of other Emmy nominated shows.
Are we talking Game of Thrones popularity? Honestly, probably not. But the ability to make the cut doesn’t seem completely out of the realm of possibility. Especially not with the shakeups Chibnall is bringing to the show.
Doctor Who‘s home with always be Britain along with the BAFTAs, but if it could get out of the “cult following” and into mainstream media, who knows what could happen. However, that would definitely take some time.
Even in Britain, people have been noticing the lack of money in the show. Most noticeably, there hasn’t been any Season 9 or 10 music available to buy — something that has been constant since the New Series began. While the show would a bit of work on in its home country in terms of money, there’s only up here in the United States.
What categories could the Doctor Who be up for?
The Doctor
If Doctor Who does make it be Emmy nominated, I think most easily would be Outstanding Actress in a Series for the Doctor, now played by Jodie Whittaker. The Doctor is a character not played before in any American culture. If the show could reach the point where people watched BBC America on the scale they watch other British television shows, I think they would be shocked at what the character entails.
To be the Doctor, you have to have a niche performance about you — something to make the actor or actress stick out amongst the thirteen actors that have come before you playing the same role. You also have to be able to really bring some of those actors into your performance while still making it your own.
Simply put — if given the chance, anyone who plays the Doctor would have the ability to be nominated, if not win, an Emmy award.
Writing
For the same reason as anyone who has to play the Doctor, writing/running the character would offer the same possibility for a nomination. We’ve seen award-winning writing throughout Capaldi’s era – look no further than Heaven Sent.
