Season Nine Doctor Who Superlative: Best Doctor Moment

For our next Doctor Who Season Nine Superlative, we’re doing the best Doctor Moment…except it was too hard to pick just one!

In Season Nine, there were many moments that made the Doctor stand out. Whether it was helping his arch enemy, or the Zygon invasion, or what would become the most epic episodes of the entire New Series, the Doctor rarely had as many fantastic moments as he did in season nine.

That being said, it’s hard to pick just one. Despite the fact that Superlatives don’t give runner-up positions, it’s the only way to truly appreciate how great the Doctor was throughout the whole season.

So let’s start off with the third best Doctor moment, the War Speech.

3. War Speech

The War Speech during the Zygon two-parter was one of the most popular moments in season nine. When it aired, we finally saw a part of the Doctor we haven’t seen since the Fiftieth Anniversary. The pain and agony that he holds onto because of what he thinks he did in burning up Gallifrey. It’s episodes like The Zygon Inversion that show us another side to the Doctor. At that point, it’s all up to the actor to bring it home.

The Speech originally portrayed by Capaldi became so popular that other ex-Doctors shared their versions of the speech, including Paul McGann and the War Doctor, John Hurt (RIP). Although, no one brought quite the agony and hopelessness and desperation that Capaldi brought.

2. Axe Fight

Honestly, the entire first two episodes of Season Nine are fantastic episodes. You have the brilliant Michelle Gomez playing Missy, Clara and Missy teaming up, and the return of Davros. However, besides those moments, it was probably one of the best Doctor episodes as swell. Can you say versatility?

I know that’s my go-to word for Peter Capaldi, but it’s because that’s the best word to describe him. His first appearance in season nine involves teaching medieval people the word “dude”, bringing a guitar to an axe fight, and other joking moments to threatening the Daleks until they returned Clara. This episode was just one of many that showed how much Twelve cared for Clara, in a way that even Matt Smith couldn’t do.

#1. Heaven Sent

The best Doctor moment in season three is actually an entire episode. Heaven Sent, which has become an iconic episode, showed off Peter Capaldi’s acting in a way that Doctor Who has never done before. First of all, the episode was only about the Doctor. There was no one else in the episode, just the Doctor trying, for billions of years, to get back to Clara.

This episode has become so iconic because it showed a reaction to a companion leaving we haven’t seen in the New Series. We’ve seen the Doctor become depressed and isolated, but we’ve never seen him become quite as angry as they portrayed. With an entire episode (as well as Hell Bent) about the Doctor trying to get back to Clara, just the fact that Capaldi could uphold an episode by himself with no help shows how amazing the character was, as well as the actor.
