What Did Bernard Whisper In Peter Abernathy’s Ear On Westworld?
We finally know what Bernard whispered to Peter Abernathy on Westworld.
Waiting for the second season of Westworld to hit HBO has some of us wondering if we’ve been put into cold storage like Peter Abernathy. Every since Evan Rachel Wood announced that the show was going to air in the Spring of 2018, everyone keeps waiting for Wood to post a more specific date.
Guess What Bernard Said To Peter Abernathy
Until that date drops, Westworld fans still have so many questions that we want answered. One of the questions that had fans going Internet crazy was what Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) whispered to Peter Abernathy (Louis Herthum) during the first episode. Luckily, Herthum participated in a Reddit AMA several months ago and provided the closure we all needed.
What did Herthum reveal? This is what he told a Reddit user:
"Ok… we did three takes on that scene because I asked Jonah.. “do you want to see any emotion at all on my face?” He said no to the first. Then the second I brought a little into the eyes but no tears. And the third, I brought what you see in the show. Now, Bernard was saying to me, and I don’t remember verbatim because I don’t think it was in the script… “good bye old friend. For now.” And I think that is what you see him saying to me in the show. BUT what he said to me in the third take… and I think Jonah asked him to do it..was… Good bye old friend, for now. Don’t worry, we will take care of Dolores.” And that was of course the reason Peter was tearing up."
It’s no shocker that that it required several takes to create one important scene. The way they edited the scene works on several levels.
The Magic Of One Little Whisper
One of the major themes in Westworld is the Hosts becoming aware of themselves. Enter all the discussions about the reveries (little gestures or programs that have been leftover between loops): can the hosts develop memories? In this scene, we see Peter tearing up as if he is “remembering” something special from his past. We watched how Maeve changed when she kept seeing her child in her loop. We have to ask, would Peter have changed if he wasn’t put in storage?
This leads to another level of this scene that kicks off the show’s entire mystery. Why are these outsiders trying to steal information from the park? At the end of the season, we see Charlotte Hale upload 35 years worth of date into Peter, and has him sent out of the park. Why she is doing this, we don’t exactly know.
This brings us back to the whisper scene. If Bernard is saying, “Good bye old friend. For now,” then he must be part of this larger plan. Bernard knew that Peter Abernathy was going to be used later on for some mysterious reason.
That one little whisper in the first episode on Westworld has so much meaning. Although Louis Herthum provided us some information about the scene, we still need to wait a few more months. Hopefully, we’ll get even more answers.
