Game of Thrones cast and crew comment on the season 7 finale, kinda-sorta tease season 8

The Game of Thrones season 7 home boxset comes out tomorrow on both DVD and Blu-ray, and HBO is getting the hype out. You can sample a few of the special features here, while a YouTube hero named World of AKY has cut together some of the juicier bits from one of the two audio commentaries on the season 7 finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf.”

This particular commentary features showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, together with stars Lena Headey (Cersei) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow). It’s the most high-powered commentary on the set. Check it out below:

There are a lot of fun moments in here, but I’d like to draw attention to one near the end, as the group watches the Wall fall down.

"Dan Weiss: “This is all a way of telling Kit Harington that he better get in good shape for this coming year. Gonna be swinging that sword a lot. Even Lena may have to pick up a sword.”David Benioff: “The Valyrian steel sword is gonna come in handy.”"

Now, it’s not like that’s too big a spoiler — with the White Walkers on their way south, odds are good that Jon will have to spring into action against them. But it’s the closest thing to a season 8 tease in there, and confirms what we basically already know: action scenes are coming, and Jon Snow will be heavily involved in a lot of them.

Here’re some other fun moments:

  • 0:48: Kit Harington starts asking hypothetical questions about Ghost, gently poking fun at fans who wondered where he was in season 7.
  • 1:15: Jon Snow’s monologue about the value of truth apparently had some special meaning on the day it was filmed, but they don’t say what that was.
  • 1:52: Lena Headey’s stomach growls audibly and it’s hilarious.
  • 3:40: Kit Harington: “ says that she can’t have children.” Weiss: “And you’re like, ‘We’ll see about that.'”
  • 4:50: Weiss: “I would say that the that are most complicated to write are often the action-heavy episodes because they take so versions and so many people need to be involved in the process to actually write something that’s produceable.” Benioff: “They’re the least fun, because writing dialogue is fun — for us, anyway — but writing action tends to be a lot more drudgery.”
  • 5:30: Apparently the scene between Jon Snow and Theon in the Dragonstone throne room is one of the first scenes Harington shot for the season.
  • Lena Headey is shocked by several of the scenes, including Arya cutting Littlefinger’s throat (6:10) and Lyanna and Rhaegar’s wedding (6:37). Benioff: “Lena, do you not read the scripts?” Headey: “No, cause I fucking watch it! And then you ruin it every year because you make me do something — that you pay me to do — and then I fucking learn things I don’t want to.”

The Game of Thrones season 7 home boxset comes out December 12, available wherever home boxsets are sold. Like Amazon and Target and stuff.
